The usage of drinking bottled water instead of clean tap water would cause an environmental problem in the city of Beirut that is: the change in the quality or quantity of any environmental factor will induce a negative impact on the health and well-being of a man. Our project seeks to obtain a clear overview of the real cost of using plastic bottles from an environmental and economic point of view, afterwhich an alternative for safer drinking water is proposed.

The Issam Fares Institute’s Climate Change and Environment in the Arab World Program and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung recently held an International Experts Meeting entitled:
Towards a Roadmap for Sustainable Cities in the MENA Region

The International Experts Meeting covered a wide range of different topics connected to the concept of sustainable cities and addressed vital issues such as sustainable transportation and mobility, climate change and resilience, and urban policies and governance. The core aim was to shed light on the need for behavioral change on all levels of urban planning in order to bring about sustainable cities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

General themes included:
Governance, Policies and Behavioral Change: Top-Bottom or Bottom-Up Approach
Socio-Economic Impacts of Sustainable and Smart Cities
Sustainable Planning for Cities of Different Scales
Which Sustainable Transportation or Smart Mobility Concepts for MENA countries? Sustainable Cities and Climate Change – Building Resilience and the New Urban Nexus

Richard Preston has written nine books, including The Hot Zone, The Demon in the Freezer, and The Wild Trees. His books have been translated into more than 30 languages, and most of them have first appeared as articles in The New Yorker. Preston has won numerous awards, including the American Institute of Physics Award and the National Magazine Award. He’s also the only person not a medical doctor ever to receive the Centers for Disease Control’s Champion of Prevention Award for public health. An asteroid is named “Preston” after him. (Asteroid Preston is a ball of rock three miles in diameter, traveling on a wild orbit near Mars.)
