The Collected Thoughts of Thomas Berry: Part 6: The Four Establishments

Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology – Apr 21, 2024

The Collected Thoughts of Thomas Berry Part 6: The Four Establishments I With an Introduction by Sam King, Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology

The Collected Thoughts of Thomas Berry: On October 20, 2023, the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology celebrated its 25th anniversary. In celebration, the Forum began releasing to the public some rare Thomas Berry content, including this collection of audio recordings titled “The Collected Thoughts of Thomas Berry.” In these reflections, originally a limited release on cassette in 1998 (the year the Forum was founded), Thomas is in conversation with evolutionary cosmologist, Brian Thomas Swimme. They were produced by Bruce and Pamela Bochte. A work in 8 parts, the Forum will be releasing one part each month, beginning October 2023. Check back each month for a new release.

From the Collected Thoughts Introduction: In 1998, the same year the Forum was created, Thomas Berry recorded a series of perceptive reflections on our environmental challenges. They reveal his understanding, 25 years ago, of many of the pressing issues we are now facing. Berry was in conversation with Brian Thomas Swimme, an evolutionary cosmologist, and the audio tapes were produced by Bruce and Pamela Bochte. We are delighted to release them for the first time in digital form to celebrate Thomas’s inspiration for the work of the Forum on Religion and Ecology.

The 1998 recordings include these notes: “Thomas Berry’s life has spanned the 20th Century. In his earlier years he witnessed the intrusion of industrial society into the hill country of the Southern Appalachians. Later as a scholar and historian he became increasingly concerned over the disruption of the basic life systems of this continent and of the Earth itself. In his view the devastation resulting from our industrial way of life is so severe that we must now reshape the human venture in a more benign mode of presence to the natural world, if either the planet or ourselves are to survive into the 21st century in any acceptable manner. Such is the Great Work assigned to us in these years of transition into the 21st century. Already this new period begins to dawn over the horizon. These thoughts that he presents here should be of benefit to everyone, for we are all responsible for the world that we will be giving over to our children.”

Thomas Berry was a cultural historian, author, teacher, and “geologian.” He founded and directed the Riverdale Center for Religious Research on the Hudson River and created the History of Religions Program at Fordham University. He is the author of The Dream of the Earth, The Great Work, Evening Thoughts, The Sacred Universe, The Christian Future and the Fate of Earth. With Brian Thomas Swimme he wrote The Universe Story. Berry was a major inspiration for the Journey of the Universe film and book that Brian wrote with Mary Evelyn Tucker. Free Fall guy cursed out by WABC reporter! | Andy Steele on #Unthinkable

AE911Truth – Apr 21, 2024

Andy Steele is AE911Truth’s director of operations as well as the producer and host of 9/11 Free Fall. For over a decade he has brought you interviews with nearly every researcher, scholar, and activist in the 9/11 Truth Movement. In this week’s episode of Unthinkable, the tables are turned as host Julia Picicci sits down with Andy to discuss his work over years for the cause. This includes the C-SPAN campaign that brought AE911Truth’s evidence to millions, his own street activism, and his graphic novel Born on 9/11, which was released around the 20th anniversary of September 11. You may know about some of these things, but you don’t know the stories behind them. During the discussion, Julia plays a little-known but powerful clip of a confrontation Andy had with a WABC Eyewitness News reporter in New York in 2012. The reporter cursed him out for presenting WTC evidence and questioning why the reporter wasn’t interested in the issue. (Warning: contains some explicit language.) Don’t miss this insightful interview, which offers the chance to learn more about the host you’ve been watching every week for years. You’ll also hear some great behind-the-scenes stories about some of AE911Truth’s most exciting efforts.

Globalization Is Fracturing. So What Comes Next?

Bloomberg Originals – Nov 9, 2023

After the Cold War ended, globalization took hold as the world became a network of interconnected economies. But events of recent years have caused fractures along geopolitical lines, prompting both leaders and companies to reevaluate who they do business with, and how. Amid the turmoil, a group of countries are capitalizing on this new reality, and thriving.

Europe is cooking at double speed! Are Europeans ready?

Just Have a Think – Mar 31, 2024

Europe is now the fastest warming continent on the planet. The European Environment Agency has just published its first ever Climate Risk Assessment, which finds that EU policies are nothing like robust enough to cope with what’s coming our way. So, what’s the plan??

New discovery along the Cascadia Subduction Zone

FOX 13 Seattle – Apr 19, 2023

Local scientists at the University of Washington have made an exciting discovery on the seafloor along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The same zone capable of bringing “the big one”, a 9.0 earthquake to western Washington.

What If The Big Earthquake Hits The Pacific Northwest Tomorrow? – YouTube

Off the coast of northern California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia sits the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a particular kind of fault line that will eventually unleash an earthquake not seen since the year 1700. When it does eventually hit, it’s estimated to be the largest earthquake to ever strike the modern United States. Unfortunately, the Pacific Northwest has not prepared for such an incredibly devastating disaster. So what happens if it the big earthquake hits tomorrow?

Cascading Tipping Points and Early Warning Signals showing a Critical Slowing Down

Paul Beckwith – Apr 21, 2024

I chat about tipping point cascades in the climate system and Early Warming Signals that show we are rapidly approaching a multitude of tipping points.

A good analogy is that of dominos, we often think of one chain of dominos, where one topples the next, and so on until they all fall down. Some tipping points are like this, but the AMOC collapse would be more like parallel chains of dominos, where one domino tipping hits 2 or 3 other dominos simultaneously, causing a multitude of tipping chains, which is a greatly magnified effect.

Let’s say the first thing that tips is the Arctic Sea Ice loss and then massive Greenland Ice Sheet calving. This would inject large amounts of fresh water into the Arctic, and the lighter water could shut down the AMOC. This would cool the whole high-latitude Northern hemisphere. Thus, it would stabilize and regrow Arctic Sea Ice, Greenland, and slow down and even reverse permafrost loss. The Southern Hemisphere would warm, the ITCZ would shift southward, tropical monsoons would shift southward, the ENSO would likely change to a near permanent El Niño, and we would really be in a different world. Eventually, the warming in the north would re-establish itself and come to dominate the cooling effects with a vengeance.

Via statistical analysis on the dynamics of system change, we have various Early Warning System (EWS) indicators that give us some clues as to how close we are to thresholds of various Earth system tipping elements. Importantly, most systems exhibit a critical slowing down as they lose resilience when we near threshold of tipping; this is reflected in an increase in the autocorrelation functions. I chat about the many tipping elements that are showing these EWS signs in an alarming way.

Pro-Palestine protesters demand Yale University to divest military manufacturers

By Mike Cerullo and Kimberlyn Bouley

Published: Apr. 20, 2024 at 2:28 PM EDT|Updated: 14 hours ago

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – Protesters camped outside the Schwarzman Center and demanded Yale University to divest from military weapon manufacturers over the weekend.

According to protestors on Wednesday, Yale’s Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility released a statement saying that it would not recommend divestment to the board of trustees because the body had determined, “military weapons manufacturing for authorized sales did not meet the threshold of grave social injury, a prerequisite for divestment.”

More than four hundred protestors were stationed in tents outside the Schwarzman Center and the Beinecke Plaza on Friday night.

Some background history on the evolution of Yale “divestment” policies

Ethical-Investor

During 1968 and 1969 Yale students and faculty requested that President Kingman Brewster and the Yale Corporation reexamine the university’s investments policies related businesses working with the apartheid regime in South Africa.

At the time, the students met directly with the Yale Corporation and engaged in particular with one of its members — J. Irwin Miller — who, as Chairman of the Cummins Corporation, had maintained historic ties with South African investments.  Previously, Mr. Miller had helped to establish the National Council of Churches (NCC) in the 1950s, and he clearly understood the moral dilemmas facing the Yale Corporation that were made plain by the students’ demands.

As an outcome of these initial engagements with the Yale Corporation, two of the graduate students involved — Jon Gunnemann and Charles Powers — along with several of the faculty organized an explicit course in 1969 to study the problems involved in the ethics of institutional investment.  In 1972 Yale University Press published The Ethical Investor, widely regarded at the time as an important innovation in the realm of assessing institutional financial strategies.

Does this represent the best judgment of Yale Corporation’s Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility (ACIR) in light of what is now known in April 2024?

Trustees disperse from Yale Corporation meeting as protesters march to confront them – Yale Daily News

Yale’s highest governing body gathered at the Greenberg Conference Center on Saturday. Trustees did not provide updates about the ongoing presidential search, which is in its eighth month. Protesters marched to confront the Corporation but narrowly missed trustees’ exits.
The Yale Daily News 11:36 am, Apr 20, 2024

Early Saturday morning, the Yale Corporation — the University’s highest governing body, which includes 16 trustees as well as University President Peter Salovey — convened at the Greenberg Conference Center for their last meeting before the summer recess.

The Yale Corporation meeting comes the morning after pro-divestment protesters stayed overnight on Beinecke Plaza with an encampment of more than 25 tents. The encampment followed a mass protest during Salovey’s farewell dinner in the Schwarzman Center last night, and a week-long effort by various students and groups to occupy the plaza. The Corporation — which is in charge of the search for Yale’s 24th president — is also in the eighth month of its search but has not shared a timeline for when the decision will be made. Salovey is set to step down on June 30.

The Corporation meeting ended just after noon. By 12:31 p.m., the first trustees — Maryana Iskander LAW ’03 and Neal Wolin ’83 LAW ’88 — left the building through the front exit. As trustees were heading to the cars and limousines taking them to airports, reporters from the News asked Corporation members questions about the content of their meeting, the presidential search and the secrecy surrounding the process, Yale’s divestment policy and pro-divestment protesters on Beinecke Plaza. None of the thirteen trustees who exited from the front door responded to these questions.

Four trustees, including Ann Miura-Ko ’98, Joshua Steiner ’87, David Thomas ’78 GRD ’86 and Michael Warren ’90, told the News that they had a “great meeting.” Marta Tellado GRD ’02 told the News that a Corporation meeting “is always meaningful.”

Three of the trustees and Salovey chose to leave the conference center through other exits, which a Yale police officer prevented the News from accessing.

Less than 10 minutes after the trustees finished exiting, approximately 65 protesters who had marched from Beinecke Plaza arrived at the conference center to confront the trustees. After around 20 minutes chanting in front of the center, the protesters returned to Beinecke Plaza, where they remain as of 4 p.m.

The News will continue to provide live updates on the Yale Corporation and the encampment on Beinecke Plaza.
