“AL-MUGHAYYIR, West Bank — The attack by Israeli settlers on this Palestinian village was the worst anyone here could remember. There were pools of dried blood on the rooftop where assailants shot a man dead; a pile of lambs with their necks slit was thick with buzzing flies.

At least two Palestinians were killed in the rampage across West Bank villages near Ramallah over the weekend, according to residents, monitoring groups and paramedics, fueled by calls for retribution after a 14-year-old Israeli shepherd went missing in the surrounding area and was later found dead. The Israeli military said he was the victim of a “terrorist attack.””

How do the stories we tell shape the boundaries of our beliefs about what is possible? From the dawn of time, stories are how humans have made sense of the world. This episode emphasizes the fundamental role stories play in our lives, our inclination towards dystopian narratives, and the potential for bigger, better stories to unleash the power of human imagination and creativity moving forward.

Why people want to put small nuclear reactors everywhere

DW Planet A Apr 12, 2024

#nuclearenergy #planeta #smallmodularreactor

The race to develop small modular reactors is on, with the promise to provide fossil-free energy everywhere. But only one has been built so far. What’s going wrong? #nuclearenergy #smallmodularreactor #planeta We’re destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn’t need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we’ll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

More and more gigantic tankers carrying LNG, liquefied natural gas, are crisscrossing the oceans – and we’re building infrastructure to trade ever larger amounts. But shouldn’t we be moving AWAY from fossil fuels? #PlanetA #LNG #naturalgas We’re destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn’t need to be this way.

Untangling the multiple parts of Medicare | 1A

When we began our retirement series a couple months ago, there was one topic that kept coming up: Medicare.

Questions about managing health care as a senior flooded our inbox. And it’s no wonder. Medicare is complicated. Nearly 67 million people use some form of the federal government’s health insurance program, which is for those over 65 and younger people with some disabilities. But untangling the multiple different parts can be a headache.

And then there’s Medicare Advantage.

Unlike traditional Medicare, which is through the government, Medicare Advantage is a privatized insurance plan. With the help of some star-studded commercials, it’s become increasingly popular.

But it’s also become controversial. According to a 2023 study from the Brown University School of Public Health, nearly half of those who signed up for Medicare Advantage left their plans by the end of five years.

So, what’s going on? And what should you know before enrolling? We try to untangle Medicare, Medicare Advantage and answer your questions about health care as a senior.

The world’s fight for ‘climate justice’

Some of the world’s poorest and lowest carbon-emitting countries are suffering the most from climate change. Is it time for ‘climate justice’?

In March and April 2019, two devastating cyclones swept through Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest countries. Hundreds of people were killed and millions more left in need of humanitarian support, such as access to safe water. The first storm, Cyclone Idai, was the second deadliest to ever hit the Southern Hemisphere. The second, Cyclone Kenneth, was the strongest to ever hit Africa.

This year, a major drought has led to the “complete disappearance” of food sources in Madagascar, according to the United Nation’s World Food Programme. The “famine-like conditions”, driven by climate change, are leaving people to eat only locusts and cactus leaves, it said in November.

Catastrophic events like these are among the ways millions of people around the world are already being impacted by climate change, many of whom have made little contribution to global emissions. From heat waves and floods to sea level rise and glacial melt, each year we learn more about the human influence on our climate – and witness more of its impacts.
