Orion spacecraft completes first mission – is Mars next?

RT America

Published on Dec 5, 2014
NASA scientists successfully launched the Orion spacecraft early Friday from Florida and, four-and-a-half hours later, the experimental vehicle splashed down in the Pacific. In the interim, Orion traveled more than 3,000 miles from Earth and orbited the planet twice. NASA believes that Orion or a similar spacecraft may be able to bring astronauts to a near-Earth asteroid during the next decade and eventually to Mars. Leroy Chiao, a former NASA astronaut, talks to RT’s Ameera David about the future of the project and what else is planned for the space agency.

Mass evacuation in Philippines as the islands wait for Typhoon Hagupit to strike

euronews (in English)

Published on Dec 6, 2014
Around 500,000 people living in coastal areas of the Philippines have fled inland as the islands await the arrival of a powerful storm.

Typhoon Hagupit has lost its ‘super’ status, having dipped below the level five category, but weather experts still expect it to be destructive with winds up to 195km per hour.

People are taking no chances. Shops that have anything left to sell are still open as families continue to stock up, but many are closed, boarded up in precautionary fashion.

The New Space Race

Al Jazeera English

Published on Dec 6, 2014

“There’s your new spacecraft, America”.Those were the words NASA’s mission control commentator used as the Orion capsule came safely back to earth. It was a declaration that spoke of politics and prestige. The United States, demonstrating its superpower status to the world. But what of the reality? At the height of the Cold War, the US devoted over four percent of its total federal budget to space exploration.Today, NASA gets less than a tenth of that. The US space agency is a shadow of its former self. The Orion won’t fly again until 2018 at the earliest. But the new space race is not with the Soviet Union, it’s with private enterprise. One crowdfunded private consortium, Mars One, is aiming to put humans on the red planet a decade earlier than NASA.Another company, Planetary Resources, is planning to mine asteroids for rare metals. And for the super-rich, there’s the promise of space tourism from Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic. So what is the future of space travel?
