Bhopal: Gas, Death and Justice

NewsClickin

Published on Dec 16, 2014

NewsClick interviewed N.D. Jayprakash from BGPSSS and Delhi Science Forum on the 30th anniversary of Bhopal Gas Tragedy and on the current situation. He tells that the figure used by the Court and the 1989 Settlement order regarding the number of victims was much less than the actual ones and hence money allocated for relief is completely inadequate. The government admitted the gross underestimate but effective measures to challenge the original settlement and provide relief have yet to be taken. The judiciary has failed to provide proper justice despite repeated petitions to the Supreme Court. The government has failed to identify, monitor and provide proper relief to the victims. That is why the Bhopal tragedy still continues for the people of Bhopal.Worst of all, no lesson has been learnt and hazardous plants are coming up near population centers.

What followed was a deep and often funny conversation about who we are, where we came from, and why Interstellar is a poor example of melding science with the humanities (burn, Nolans). Oh, and Mr. Wilson’s also got some heady notions about where both our species and the planet are headed. Watch the video to have your mind blown.
