How Albania Became Europe’s Rubbish Tip

Albania is slowly sinking under the weight of Europe’s waste. This report investigates an industry of waste that is both necessary for survival, yet a threat for many Albanians. For how long can it continue?

“For us, the Roma, it is our only work, because nobody will hire us”, says Renato, a scavenger earning half the average national wage. In the “dustbin of Europe”, countries such as Serbia, Slovenia and Russia dump their scrap in vast quantities. Yet Albania’s infrastructure is insufficient for dealing with this often toxic waste. Despite efforts to restrict imports, waste continues to enter under the guise of “raw material”. In towns such as Elbasan, home to a large metallurgical plant, the poor control on the industry is beginning to destroy the health of its workers. As one doctor describes, “On one hand, the community has been here for a long time, and needs work. But on the other, it cannot afford the sacrifice”.

Law students sue Harvard over its fossil fuel investments | Divest Harvard

Posted Nov 20, 2014 10:55 am CST

By Martha Neil

An activist group that includes three law students has sued Harvard University in Massachusetts state court over its fossil fuel investments.

In a complaint (PDF) for declaratory and injunctive relief that was filed Wednesday in Suffolk County Superior Court, the Harvard Climate Justice Coalition alleges “mismanagement of charitable funds” by the president and fellows of Harvard College, as well as others, according to the Harvard Crimson.

“Our legal claims are simple,” explain three members of the group, all of whom are Harvard law students, in an opinion piece published by the Boston Globe. “Harvard is a nonprofit educational institution, chartered in 1650 to promote ‘the advancement and education of youth.’ By financially supporting the most dangerous industrial activities in the history of the planet, the Harvard Corporation is violating commitments under its charter as well as its charitable duty to operate in the public interest.”

The complaint seeks a court ruling declaring that Harvard has breached its obligations under the charter, requiring the corporation to immediately withdraw from direct investment in fossil fuel companies and “ordering defendants to take immediate steps to begin withdrawing indirect holdings and to complete withdrawal within a reasonable period of time.”

One of its two counts, “intentional investment in abnormally dangerous activities,” has no apparent legal precedent, the New York Times (reg. req.) says.

Harvard must divest from fossil fuels – Opinion – The Boston Globe | Divest Harvard

JOSH REYNOLDS FOR THE BOSTON GLOBE/file

Pedestrians crossed the campus of Harvard University.

On Wednesday, we filed a lawsuit against the Harvard Corporation over its investments in fossil fuels. As student members of the Harvard Climate Justice Coalition, we’re demanding that our university stop profiting from the destruction of the earth’s climate and that it divest its holdings in gas, oil, and coal companies.

Our legal claims are simple. Harvard is a nonprofit educational institution, chartered in 1650 to promote “the advancement and education of youth.” By financially supporting the most dangerous industrial activities in the history of the planet, the Harvard Corporation is violating commitments under its charter as well as its charitable duty to operate in the public interest.

We’re also suing on behalf of future generations. By investing in the extraction of fossil fuels, the Harvard Corporation is actively supporting the destruction of the earth’s atmosphere and the catastrophic consequences that will be visited upon our children and grandchildren. It is our duty to give voice to these coming generations and to hold the Corporation accountable for its reckless and shortsighted behavior.

Our suit charges that the Harvard Corporation is breaching its duties under its charter by investing in fossil fuel companies. Our second count is a novel tort claim, intentional investment in abnormally dangerous activities, that is based in well-established legal principles regarding liability for promoting especially hazardous behavior.

As law students (the other four plaintiffs in the suit study physics, biology, history, and literature), we also recognize that courts — like our other institutions — have been slow to address global warming. In bringing this lawsuit, we hope to push our legal system toward a more responsible, and more realistic, reckoning with the disaster of climate change. The Harvard Corporation may twiddle its thumbs while the temperature rises. But the planet cannot wait.

Messages from the NYC People’s Climate March: an analysis

On September 21, 2014, a team of students with the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication joined over 310,000 people in the streets of New York City for the People’s Climate March, to voice support for a safe climate. The march was an exuberant and colorful display of diverse voices united in common cause. Our students conducted 167 interviews of marchers and documented in photos and audio recordings what messages were being communicated and why. Today we’re releasing their report, which presents the major themes they observed and heard from the demonstrators.

When asked, “Why are you marching about global warming today?” participants were most likely to say they were marching as part of a group, because they were passionate about the issue, or because global warming is fundamental to their work. Other common reasons included the need to create public pressure for action on global warming and to advocate on behalf of children and future generations.

When asked what gave them hope, three different themes emerged – those who were: (1) doubtful — the situation is grave; (2) hopeful — because of the march itself, and “because I have to be”; (3) very hopeful — examples of positive change are happening all around us.

Analyzing the visual messages, a number of popular themes emerged, including Replacing Fossil Fuels with Clean Energy, references to the Environment and Nature, and Food and Farming. When asked “Why this particular message?” many interviewees cited the need for Clean Energy, followed by trying to influence Politics and Government, Corporate Accountability, and improving Public Health.
