Shell profits have risen to 32.2 billion pounds after tax. The most they’ve ever made in their 115 years in business. Now I say ‘after tax’ because that’s the row that this news has reignited today. There’s real anger at companies making billions when many of their customers are struggling to pay their bills or even food and heat their homes, so campaigners want to see energy firms hit with more taxes.

To prosper for very much longer on the changing Earth humankind will need to move beyond its current fossil-fueled civilization toward one that is sustained on recycled materials and renewable energy. This is not a trivial shift. It will require a major transition in all aspects of our lives.
