Pirates operated off the coast of North Africa preyed on European coastal settlements and ships; enslaving Europeans who were subsequently brought back to port cities in Morocco and Algeria among other places. Historians have speculated that from the 16th to the early 19th century, as much as 1 million Christian Europeans were enslaved by the Barbary pirates.
