Generative AI: What’s all the hype about? – Marketplace

The new wave of generative artificial intelligence, like ChatGPT and DALL-E, has got the tech business in a frenzy.

Venture capitalists are pouring money into AI startups: Investments in generative AI have already exceeded $2 billion. But there are lots of unknown unknowns about the innovation. There’s virtually no oversight from the government, and teachers, artists, researchers and others are raising concerns.

“There’s so much happening under the hood that we don’t get access to … there needs to be much more transparency,” said Alex Hanna, director of research at the Distributed AI Research Institute.

On the show today: why AI is getting so much attention these days, ethical issues with the tech and what lawmakers should focus on when trying to regulate it. Plus, why some say it could exacerbate the climate crisis.

In the News Fix, some Kia and Hyundai cars keep getting stolen, and insurance companies are taking notice. Plus, we might spend the most on health care, but health in the United States falls behind other high-income countries by several measures. And, why you might want to get ready for inflation whiplash.

ChatGPT creates shortcuts for students, headaches for teachers – Marketplace

You know Newton’s third law? The one that says for every action in nature, there is an equal and opposite reaction? Well, the same might be said for business.

In late November, the company OpenAI launched ChatGPT, the free (at least during the current research phase) artificial intelligence-powered chatbot that has become famous — or infamous, in some circles — for its ability to quickly generate essays or any kind of writing. Now, many students are using that technology to do their homework, and school districts are seeking software to detect whether that homework has been created by AI.

One place that’s happening is Hinsdale Central High School in a suburb of Chicago. On a recent morning, students moved between classes and wished each other luck on exams. English teacher David Lange weaved around them and pointed out posters in the hallway that showcased the classics, old and new.

“‘Catch-22.’ ‘War and Peace.’ ‘Becoming’ by Michelle Obama. There’s my ‘Hamlet,’” Lange said.

“Hamlet” — the Shakespearean tragedy — is one of the main texts Lange assigns to seniors taking his literature course. He has them write lots of essays to help them figure out what they think about the play.

The Resurgence of the Independent Bookstore

GBH Forum Network – Feb 2, 2023

Something exciting and unexpected has been happening over the past few years. More than 300 new independent bookstores have sprouted up across the country and the bookstore owners and their inventory have become much more diverse.

The phenomenon is in some part, attributable to the pandemic. People were shuttered in for extended periods and had time to read. Secondly, they recognized their hunger for a place of connection that was safe. The public had rallied rather unexpectedly to support their local bookstores during lockdown and when restrictions relaxed, people returned to their favorite places. These bookstores represented much more than anonymous Amazonian warehouses for purchasing; they had become much-needed centers for community engagement and dialogue, crucibles for ideas and human interaction.

Consequently, all sorts of people with no professional background in books, used their savings or government stimulus checks to follow a dream of opening their own bookstore. Despite the numerous ongoing challenges, nobody seems to have regretted their decision. So, what makes a bookstore special and why become a bookseller? In this Forum we talk to a variety of bookstore owners about their passion for the printed word and their experiences in the literary world.

Antarctica’sTipping Point – The Science of Ice Collapse

Out There Learning – Oct 28, 2023

Antarctica may be melting faster than anyone realizes, and the implications for humanity are potentially disastrous. Not only will sea levels rise increasingly this century, but if the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is destabilized, the process could be continuous and irreversible for centuries to come. Dr Tim Naish explains what Antarctic climate scientists are finding out, why they are so concerned.

Ron DeSantis’ Version of Higher Education Reform

Free Speech TV, Feb 2, 2023

#FSTV

The Governor is now trying to remove the Critical Race Theory from Florida’s public Universities. Getting rid of African-American studies and their history erases a large part of American history and the foundation this world was built on and benefited from at their expense. They’re calling this an “evolution” in “intellectual freedom.” How can you use the term “intellectual freedom” while attempting to remove the choice of what Professors can teach and students can learn?
