What is greenwashing?
Greenwashing is a type of marketing. It is a way to make products more appealing to customers who care about the environment.
When companies do things that are harmful to the environment while saying they care about climate change, this is called ‘greenwashing’.
The International Consumer Protection Enforcement Network recently analysed 500 websites and found that up to 40% of environmentally friendly claims might be misleading customers.
This means that greenwashing is a common issue, but how do you spot it in the first place?

Offsetting and net zero scams are the new climate denial… and it has dangerous consequences.
Corporations like global industrial meat giant JBS get away with polluting, thanks to net zero” marketing scams. But JBS isn’t tackling the main source of its climate impact: methane from cattle. Their “Net Zero” plan also allows them to profit from the destruction of the Amazon and other habitats for years to come, fueling the climate and biodiversity crises.
To avoid an extreme climate emergency we need to halve global emissions in the next 10yrs. We need fast emissions cuts. We need #realzero.
What is real zero? Real zero = Net zero – offsetting
We need to stop climate pollution, as it happens, at its source. No delays that cover-up polluting business as usual.
At #COP26, governments must deliver REAL climate action to cut emissions and protect nature.

Offsetting scams are the new climate denial… and it has dangerous consequences.
French oil giant Total claims they’re committed to a clean energy future, but they are trying to drill for oil in a pristine forest in the Republic of Congo – home to many indigenous communities, as well as critically endangered species such as lowland gorillas.

We’ll never reach the world’s net-zero emission goal by 2050 unless the world’s largest oil companies transition to clean energy. And they’re spending a lot of money trying to convince us that that’s exactly what they’re doing. But here, in three charts, we’ll show you how they’re engaged in greenwashing: trying to fool us into thinking they’re part of the solution, while in fact they continue to be at the very heart of the problem. GREENWASHING is a form of marketing spin in which green PR and green marketing are deceptively used to persuade the public that an organization’s products, aims and policies are environmentally friendly.

The New York Times – Jul 14, 2022
Finally, corporations are jumping into action on climate change — or at least that’s what they’d like us to believe. Many of the world’s biggest and most polluting companies have recently promised to curb their carbon output, by reaching net-zero emissions in the next few decades. These sweeping pledges conjure a world where we can have it all: economic growth and global trade — without the global warming that usually comes with that. While saving the planet demands an approach more ambitious than incremental change, these corporate fantasies of the future just don’t stand up to scrutiny. In a new @nytopinon video, we expose three major flaws in net-zero pledges that make them a dangerous distraction from the crisis at hand.
