Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-serving British monarch in history, having ascended to the throne in 1952 at age 25. Over her 70-year reign, the queen saw the footprint of her monarchy shrink. At the time of her death, she was the head of state of the United Kingdom as well as 14 Commonwealth countries.
