Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged in his Independence Day speech to turn poverty-ridden India into a developed country in the next 25 years. He delivered his national address as the country marked 75 years since independence from British rule.
Speaking from New Delhi’s 17th-century Red Fort, Modi said that India will strive for excellence in science and technology, set up industries, attain food and energy security and become a manufacturing hub. While India is expected to grow the fastest among major economies in the current fiscal year, some see India’s deep-seeded social inequalities as a barrier.
