Cops thought they could arrest them for protesting in public, but activists turned the tables

Jul 28, 2022

The growing and eclectic brand of activism known as cop watching continues to invent creative ways to confront overpolicing across the country. In this episode, Police Accountability Report hosts Taya Graham and Stephen Janis examine the arrest of two Youtube activists and how they responded in light of recent pushback from police departments across the country. The story illustrates how the grassroots movement of holding cops accountable continues to evolve in ways both unexpected and productive.

Dems Slam GOP Senators for Voting Against Expanding Veteran Health Care

Jul 28, 2022

‘They have just sentenced veterans to death’ — Democratic senators ripped into their Republican colleagues for stalling legislation that would extend health care benefits to veterans who had been exposed to burn pits.

The PACT Act initially passed with strong bipartisan support, 84-14, earlier this month. But when the bill came to a new procedural vote on Wednesday, more than two dozen Republican senators changed their votes.

The timing of those GOP senators’ flip-flop raised eyebrows, given that it came shortly after Senate Democrats had announced a deal on a $739B climate, tax, & health care reconciliation bill.

Senate agreement on climate change, health care revives Biden’s legislative agenda

Jul 28, 2022

Senate Democrats are lauding a deal on a spending package to reduce the deficit, lower health care costs, raise corporate taxes and combat climate change. It’s a stunning development after more than a year of negotiations had failed to win the support of West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin. White House correspondent Laura Barrón-López and John Bresnahan of Punchbowl News join Geoff Bennett to discuss.

Ukrainian Feminist: We Need Western Solidarity in Fighting Russian Imperialism

Jul 28, 2022

We speak to Oksana Dutchak, a Ukrainian feminist and co-editor of the leftist journal Spilne, who fled to Germany because of the “inability to live under the constant pressure of fear” as Russian invaded. She says Western leftists and feminists who have misgivings about Western military support for Ukraine often overlook that Ukrainians are fighting for self-determination and against imperialism. “What does it mean to stop the war? How it should be stopped? There are questions which should be in the center if you want to give a political answer to the challenges Ukrainian society is facing,” she adds.

Ukraine Invasion: Russian Opposition to War Has Been Smashed, with Many Dissidents Fleeing Abroad

Jul 28, 2022

We look at how the Russian war in Ukraine is impacting the Russian people, with many Russian dissidents who oppose the invasion choosing to flee abroad after facing violent crackdowns at home. Ilya Budraitskis is a Russian historian and political writer who left his home in Moscow after the war in Ukraine began, and recently launched the media outlet Posle. Meanwhile, Putin’s Russia looks like an extremely “conformist” society, where “some 200 kilometers from your home you have a full-scale war with the army of your country that started this war, and you pretend not to follow the news, not to disturb your normal way of life with this terrifying information,” says Budraitskis.

Ever since President George Bush Senior declared the American Way of Life is not up for negotiation, the United States has stood in the way of global efforts to limit the impacts of climate destruction.

We are now unnecessarily gambling our collective futures away because US politicians put wealth and ideology above the endless warnings of climate scientists, ecologist, among many others now screaming for change to avert disaster.

It is late in the day and we are all now at risk from business as usual policy and investment that prolongs the use of fossil fuels. Changing now could avert some suffering and, as we discuss here, the United States must grow up and face its responsibility as the world largest emitter.
