Global Death Toll from COVID-19 Tops 15 Million as Vaccine Inequity Continues to Prolong Pandemic

May 6 2022

The World Health Organization says the coronavirus pandemic has now caused an excess of 15 million deaths globally. We look at how staggering death counts reveal broader political failures to protect public health and close the international vaccine gap. “Western governments and rich corporations who are based primarily in the West have done very little to advance vaccine inequity or to help the entire world end this pandemic faster,” says Achal Prabhala, coordinator of the AccessIBSA project, who adds that many poor countries have also not used all the policy tools at their disposal.

Premature “Normalcy” Could Backfire as U.S. COVID Death Toll Passes 1 Million & New Variants Spread

May 6 2022

Governments around the world are eagerly returning back to pre-pandemic conditions by relaxing preventative restrictions, lifting mask mandates and pulling back public funding. Dr. Abraar Karan, infectious disease fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine, says these moves are overly optimistic and that the U.S. is not prepared for new variants spreading around the country. “We’re trying to say it’s over. It’s not true,” he says. “As time goes on, immunity wanes, and we will begin to see more severe cases.”

Nobody Wins Without Fossil Fuel Divestment

The College Climate Coalition – Dec 9, 2019

On November 23, 500 students and alumni disrupted the annual Harvard-Yale football match, risking arrest to demand that their universities divest from the fossil fuel industry and cancel their holdings in Puerto Rican debt. This was not the first time students were arrested fighting for divestment, and it won’t be the last. It marks a moment in a much larger fight for fossil fuel divestment that has been growing for nearly a decade. To date, over $12 trillion worth of funds have divested holdings in the industry.

The momentum from this action is growing. On December 6th, students from colleges and universities across the United States stood together to send a message that when our institutions invest in the fossil fuel industry, #NobodyWins.

We are cultivating leaders who realize that to change the status quo, people must claim power and stand up for our interests. While our schools claim to be preparing us for the future, they fund and profit from activities that are destroying it.

Our universities will only act if we do. Email collegeclimatecoalition or visit nobodywins2019.com to get involved and join the movement.

Together, we can revoke the social license of the fossil fuel industry and set the stage for a just and livable future.

Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard – Divest Harvard

We’re the campaign that won Harvard’s divestment from fossil fuels after a decade-long fight. Now, the fight continues for climate and endowment justice on campus and beyond.

Our Platform

1. DISCLOSE: We recognize transparency as a necessary prerequisite to ensure that Harvard’s endowment meets the goals of the university and the communities it serves. Harvard must publicly disclose all current direct and indirect investments in the fossil fuel industry in an annual document.

2. DIVEST:
We condemn investment in the fossil fuel industry for its role in actively perpetuating the climate crisis. Harvard must release a statement declaring a commitment to total divestment of the endowment from direct and indirect holdings in the fossil fuel industry, along with a comprehensive plan to achieve this.

3: REINVEST: We call for Harvard to leverage its financial power for reparative justice by supporting environmentally sustainable, socially responsible, and community-based investment. We call on Harvard to work with the students, alumni, and faculty of Divest Harvard to establish new reinvestment principles.
