Dr. Vermund will discuss the public health challenges facing the globe in the next 5-10 years that will ensue from direct and indirect effects of global climate change. In the context of the changes in weather, oceans, freshwater such as snow and ice, human populations, and species diversity, he will give the short and longer-term impacts anticipated in human health and welfare. Over the short term, he will present the human health threats that are the immediate consequences of global warming and how they can be mitigated. Over the longer term, he will review the evidence for unprecedented threats to global health in the next 50 years. A focus will be on interventions, i.e., what can we do now to mitigate planetary and public health threats.
