In the last decade, the North African region has witnessed momentous events from social justice struggles and mobilisations to massive uprisings and revolutions. The region is still a cauldron of resistance advancing demands of dignity, bread, social justice, freedom and sovereignty. In this 3rd webinar in the series ‘the Arab uprisings a decade on: Taking stock, Looking forward’, we will cover some of the second wave uprisings (2018-2021) in Algeria and Sudan and highlight some of the social and political struggles in Morocco in the last decade. We will also centre the decolonisation struggle of Western Sahara. With speakers:

From The Nazis To Corporate America – Pesticides’ Devastating War On Health – By Author Mitchel Cohen
Mitchel Cohen coordinates the No Spray Coalition in New York City, which successfully sued the City government over its indiscriminate spraying of toxic pesticides. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and received his B.A. from SUNY Stony Brook, where he co-founded the Red Balloon Collective in 1969—a radical-thinking and creatively acting group that put their bodies and art on the line against the U.S. war machine and in defense of social and environmental justice.
Mitchel ran for Mayor of NYC as one of five Green Party candidates. That primary election fell on Sept. 11, 2001, when life as we know it was changed forever. He was editor of the national newspaper, “Green Politix,” for one faction of the national Green Party (before being purged), as well as the NY State Green Party newspaper; chaired the non-commercial, listener-sponsored WBAI radio (99.5 FM) Local Board, and hosted a weekly show, “Steal This Radio,” for NYTalkRadio.net. His writings include: The Social Construction of Neurosis, and other pamphlets; What is Direct Action? a book that draws on personal experiences as well as lessons from Occupy Wall Street; two books of poetry—One-Eyed Cat Takes Flight and The Permanent Carnival—and scores of pamphlets, which he sells on the streets and subways of his beloved Brooklyn. His forthcoming book of poetry and short stories is called, The Rubber Stamp Man and will be available later this year.

The parents of a student killed in the 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School duped a former president of the National Rifle Association into giving a high school graduation speech defending gun rights in front of 3,044 empty white chairs — one chair for each student who could not graduate this year because they were killed by gun violence. David Keene, who still serves on the NRA board, thought he was giving a rehearsal speech for graduating students at the James Madison Academy in Las Vegas, but no such school exists. Video of the speech was turned into a viral video promoting universal background checks. The stunt was organized by the group Change the Ref, which was founded by Manuel and Patricia Oliver, whose son Joaquin was shot dead in the Parkland, Florida, massacre. Manuel Oliver says the video has led to an outpouring of support from across the U.S. “We need to do these more often, because it shows that the NRA, the gun industry and the gun lobby are not as powerful as they say,” he says.

There is a pathological mismatch between the qualities that seduce us in a leader and those that are needed to be an effective leader. Based on research on the psychology of leadership, Chamorro-Premuzic shows that if leaders were selected on competence rather than confidence, humility rather than charisma, and integrity rather than narcissism, we would not just end up with more competent leaders, but also more women leaders. In fact, he argues, the main obstacle preventing competent women from becoming leaders is the lack of career obstacles for incompetent men. Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic is an international authority in psychological profiling, talent management, leadership development, and people analytics. He is the Chief Talent Scientist at Manpower Group, co-founder and CEO of DeeperSignals and Metaprofiling, and Professor of Business Psychology at both University College London, and Columbia University. He has previously held academic positions at New York University and the London School of Economics, and lectured at Harvard Business School, Stanford Business School, London Business School, Johns Hopkins, IMD, and INSEAD, as well as being the CEO at Hogan Assessment Systems. Dr. Tomas has published 10 books and over 150 scientific papers, making him one of the most prolific social scientists of his generation. His work has received awards by the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology, to which he is a Fellow. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
