Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said the electoral votes will be counted despite being interrupted by a pro-Trump mob storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, as a joint session of Congress began to count Electoral College votes supporting Joe Biden’s win. He said the Senate will not be intimidated and kept out of their chambers by “thugs, mobs or threats.” “The United States and the United States Congress have faced down much greater threats than the unhinged crowd we saw today,” he said. “They tried to disrupt our democracy, they failed.” He noted the importance of the voice of the American public in shaping the nation’s democracy, and said the winner of the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden, will be certified.
