Integrated collections now make it possible to study African cultures from a combination of different disciplines, each drawing upon different traditions of analysis and bodies of understanding, including African art history, the history of cartography and the historical study of imagery about African cultures from the very earliest impressions of Europeans right through the evolution of colonial photography. Scholars and students from each of these traditions and many more can can now join in discussions and organized online seminars to share their data, insights and research agenda with one another.

Groups like The Africa Map Circle are exploring the means to make increasingly available computer technology of use for the analysis and subsequent sharing of research in several new realms of African studies.

World engraved views 1852 Meyer Universum plate book w/ 48 fine engravings in lovely leather binding

[Old Books, Leather Books, Decorative Leather Bindings, 19th
Century Books, Illustrated Books].

Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the book.

Meyer’s Universum or Views of The Most Remarkable Places and Objects of All Countries in Steel Engravings by Distinguished Artists with Descriptive and Historical Texts with Descriptive and Historical Texts, ed. by Charles A. Dana.
Published 1852, New York by Herrmann J. Meyer.
Volume 1, 294 pages. Text in English. Complete with 48 finely engraved full page captioned illustrations, index at rear.

Splendid period deluxe full leather binding, oblong format, slightly raised bands, gilt compartment and cover decorations, gilt title lettering, all edges and turn ins gilt. Binding remains clean, tight, and sound, joints scuffed but strong.

Interior- text block paper uniformly age toned with scattered age spotting, plates mostly clean, original tissue guards. Any age flaws are minor and easy to overlook or forgive.

A superior and very pleasing antiquarian book, much nicer than typical for this title and era. The attention to detail and level of craftsmanship displayed in the binding rise to above ordinary.

The views were originally issued separately in parts over several years. All separately bound volumes of this work (and there are a myriad of different editions and binding styles, this belonging to the best available) are desirable as view books.

All separate volumes of this monumental work can be considered complete unto themselves, “complete” runs in identical bindings are only rarely encountered.

The geographic range of locations for each volume was global and random, as opposed to thematic or organized by continent, making each volume an assortment of unrelated but excellent and finely engraved views of key locations around the world.

The following is a list (in order) of the books which appear at the end. All can be found by searching the B number on our website.
B106- Heman’s Poems
