Brazil has become the country with the second-highest number of coronavirus cases in the world. It has recorded over 330,000 infections, overtaking Russia. President Jair Bolsonaro has been widely criticized for his handling of the epidemic and is at the center of a deepening political crisis. Since the outbreak began, two health ministers have left office after pressure from Bolsonaro to promote the early use of anti-malarial drugs to treat COVID-19. Several high-profile public health experts have also left their positions. Many have been replaced by soldiers.
