Jared Kushner & the Height of Moral Squalor | The Common Good with Robert Reich

Robert Reich

Scheduled for May 21, 2020

In this episode of The Common Good, former Labor Secretary Robert Reich takes a look at Republican priorities during the pandemic: tax breaks for the rich and corporate bailouts. Reich breaks down how two tax provisions that overwhelmingly benefit real estate investors (like Jared Kushner) and hedge funds made it in to the CARES Act: extensive lobbying done by a trade group in which Jared Kushner’s family’s company is a major player. He also answers another pressing question of the pandemic: Why won’t Republicans in Congress fund federal aid for state and local governments? Reich explores how decades of Republican ideology of “starving the beast” and pushing for privatization are coming to a head in this crisis, as state and local governments are forced into draconian budget cuts for crucial public services. He also discusses the gap between Democrats’ and Republicans’ dedication to investing in the common good, and exposes the hypocrisy of Mitch McConnell dubbing relief for state and local governments as “blue state bailouts.”
