Permanent quarantine? How Big Tech plans to profit from COVID-19

Democracy Now!

May 13, 2020

In her new report for The Intercept on the “Screen New Deal,” Naomi Klein looks at how the future we’re being rushed into by the coronavirus pandemic could transform our lives by making elements of daily life under quarantine permanent, in order to benefit billionaires in the tech industry. Klein examines the case of New York, where state officials are courting tech billionaires like former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and former mayor Michael Bloomberg to deal with the fallout of the COVID-19 crisis through public-private partnerships. “They see huge opportunities in telehealth, in the educational market in public schools, in supporting us working from home,” says Klein. “They’re not looking for a traditional reopening, but rather a new paradigm where the privileged classes who are able to isolate themselves basically get everything … either delivered through digital streaming or by drone.”

PBS Report on the ‘Doomsday Glacier’

Scientists Warning

Mar 26, 2020

Lest we forget in the face of the #Coronavirus #pandemic, #ClimateChange is still happening, and accelerating. It’s been predicted for many years that increased occurrence and rapid spread of pandemics would be one of the many results of climate change. This one may not have been that, but it’s a taste of things to come. We are being given a ‘wake-up call’. Will we hear it? Will we heed it? Ordinary people seem to be ‘getting it’, but governments, and their primary clients (banks and large corporations) are trying to get us back to Business As Usual, with its destructive ‘growth economic’ system that was put in place by bankers a century ago, and still is manipulated to benefit the wealthy at the expense of the Earth and human survival. Worth a watch and a share. We thank the PBS News Hour for their allowing us to republish this report for the common welfare of all.

.Pandemic: Dr. Peter Wadhams – Our Corrupt Political-Economy & Inept Politicians

Scientists Warning

Mar 18, 2020

This first of 3 segments of my recent conversation with Dr. Wadhams on the current Coronavirus pandemic, is shared not to present the latest information on its spread, nor theory about how it got started, but rather to help people ‘connect the dots’ within today’s culture. The ‘dots’ may seem unrelated at first, but are very much related within the ‘big picture.’ If we are to discover the ‘silver lining’ in this dark, dark cloud, we’re got to understand how we might act differently in the future, on individual, community, national and global levels, since #WeAreInThisTogether. If we are to find and benefit from the ‘silver lining’ in this dark, dark pandemic cloud that is blowing across the landscape, we’re got to understand exponential growth how we might act to undo it, to simply not buy, use, and create more of everything as individuals, communities, and nations. In the current ‘lockdown’ occurring in nations who truly want to protect their people we are finding what we can live without, and how much we gain when we #LiveSimply and say #IDontBuyThat. The 3 parts of this conversation are as follows:

Coronavirus Pandemic Prompts Global Mental Health Crisis as Millions Feel Alone, Anxious & Depressed

Democracy Now!

May 14, 2020

Is the coronavirus pandemic generating a mental illness crisis? Millions face isolation, poverty and anxiety. We speak with psychology professor and author Andrew Solomon, as the United Nations calls on governments to put mental health “front and center” in their response to the crisis.

When Patients Die Alone, How Do Families and Health Workers Cope, Relieve Suffering?

Democracy Now!

We look at the tremendous emotional toll the coronavirus is taking on families when loved ones are forced to battle COVID alone in hospitals or at home, with Dr. Diane Meier, director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care and a professor of geriatrics and palliative medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She helped start a 24-hour palliative care hotline for COVID-19 patients in New York City that served nearly 900 people in a four-week period.

Pandemic: Peter Wadhams & Stuart Scott – The Genie is Out of the Bottle

This third and last of 3 segments of my recent conversation with Dr. Peter Wadhams on the current #Coronavirus pandemic, is shared not to present the latest information on its spread, nor theory about how it got started, but rather to help people contemplate the irreversible aspects of what has happened, and get our heads around the fact that our loss is Nature’s gain.

Hope that our viewers will find and benefit from the ‘silver lining’ in this dark, dark pandemic cloud that is blowing across the landscape. In the current ‘lockdown’ occurring in nations who truly want to protect their people we are finding what we can live without, and how much we gain when we #LiveSimply and say #IDontBuyThat.

The title ‘The End of Normal’ says it all. The current

COVID-19 #pandemic has changed civilization, and in many ways, there is no going back, as hard as political leaders will try to kick-start the old #Growthonomics.

Here’s Part 1 of the conversation elicited by an email from John Doyle, a long time EU Commission member, sent to his EU colleagues, on which Stuart Scott was copied. The subject line was ‘The End of Normal’ and the body of the email was a shock-and-a-half, even though John and Stuart share the same view of humanity’s ‘prognosis.’

Let The People Pick The President: The Case For Abolishing The Electoral College

May 14, 2020

Commonwealth Club

May 14, 2020

oin us virtually as we discuss why twice in the last five elections the Electoral College vote has overridden the popular vote, creating a false impression of a country divided into red and blue states, when we are actually purple from coast to coast. In addition, millions of Americans always find that their votes didn’t matter anyway, because only a handful of battleground states decide who becomes the next president. In this thoroughly researched and engaging call to arms, Jesse Wegman draws upon the history of the founding era, as well as information gleaned from 21st century Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns, to make a powerful case for abolishing what he calls the antiquated and antidemocratic Electoral College.

Wegman argues that we can at long last make every vote in the United States count―and restore belief in our democratic system.

9/11: An Architect’s Guide – Part 2 – Twin Towers’ Explosive Destruction (5/14/20 Webinar – R Gage)

9/11: An Architect’s Guide | Part 2: The Twin Towers’ Explosive Destruction
Course Number: AE911-AAG-OD2

Three-part webinar series. Each part is about 1 1/2 hours.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to conducting research and providing education about the complete destruction of the three World Trade Center skyscrapers, our courses give architects the technical knowledge and analytical framework with which to evaluate the most likely cause of those building failures.

Course Description:
Never before has a steel-framed high-rise collapsed from fire. Why, then, did three such buildings collapse on September 11, 2001?

In Part 2 of “9/11: An Architect’s Guide,” Richard Gage, AIA, provides an overview of the most important evidence related to the explosiveness of the Twin Towers’ destruction. Much like that of WTC 7, the destruction of the Twin Towers exhibited most of the features of controlled demolition.

In 2005, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) concluded that the Twin Towers’ destruction resulted from the combined effects of the airplane impact damage and ensuing fires.

Is NIST’s explanation for these unprecedented structural failures valid? Decide for yourself after watching this informative one-hour presentation. Using the information presented, you will be able to evaluate which of the two hypotheses — fire-induced failure or controlled demolition — is more consistent with the evidence.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:
1. Describe the characteristics of building fires and the aspects of high-rise design that contribute to make fire-induced failure in steel-framed high-rise buildings a rare occurrence.
2. Recognize the distinct features associated with fire-induced failure and the distinct features associated with the procedure of controlled demolition.
3. Describe step-by-step the series of structural failures that the National Institute of Standards and Technology found to be the most likely cause of the collapse of World Trade Center Twin Towers.
4. Analyze the physical evidence and the dynamics of the collapse of the Twin Towers according to how consistent it is with the competing hypotheses of fire-induced failure and controlled demolition.
