In this clip from his longer “So What You’re Saying Is…” interview, Prof. Frank Furedi explains why our obsession with Greta Thunberg is symptomatic of a wider societal crisis.
Prof. Furedi believes there is “something very sad when the adult world hides behind children, putting them on the front line” and giving up on its authority. This reminds Fuerdi of the Childrens’ Crusade.
The adult world apparently no longer believes it has the right to give leadership or direction to children. Furedi calls this “socialisation in reverse”, as adults look to children for guidance on how to behave.
When we were young, argues Furedi, children would look to adults for advice on how to act and behave. Today, however, adults appear to too often look to children for guidance on what is right or wrong. Parents often ask children what clothes they should buy, for example. This is cultural regression as adults give up their role being responsible for future generations.
This cult of youth implies that children have inherent wisdom and that old people have nothing to teach the younger generation.
