WATCH: Yovanovitch said authoritarians use smear campaigns similar to what was used against her

Published on Nov 15, 2019
In response to questioning from Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, said that authoritarian leaders let corruption interests “hijack” foreign policy and use similar smear tactics against their opponents, as was used against her. Krishnamoorthi’s line of questioning appeared to be aimed at comparing President Donald Trump to authoritarian regimes. Yovanovitch has testified that she was ousted after Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, engineered a smear campaign against her. Yovanovitch testified Nov. 15 as part of the impeachment probe that centers around a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

Cambridge Climate Protection Action Committee Outlines Goals for Achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions | News | The Harvard Crimson

The Climate Protection Action Committee unanimously supported recommendations to the City Manager’s Office that aim to combat climate change in Cambridge in a meeting Thursday night.

The recommendations came as part of the committee’s Net Zero Action Plan, a strategy to promote eliminating all production of carbon emissions in buildings and infrastructure throughout the city. The committee presented the recommendations in an Net Zero Action Plan Progress Report to ensure the city implements its previously stated goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Cambridge produced 1.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in 2012, according to a recent report conducted by the City’s Community Development Department.

Three committee members who spoke at the meeting said they found it urgent to make actionable recommendations to the City Manager’s office to institute certain suggestions from the Net Zero Action Plan. Though they agreed Cambridge is on track to meet their broader goals, they said they believe the city is behind schedule in adopting their recommendations.

Al Gore calls for fossil fuel divestment at Harvard

Published on Apr 9, 2016
Al Gore discussing his call for fossil fuel divestment in 2013 and how, in 2016, Harvard has still refused to divest from fossil fuels.

Transcript: “[There are] trillion[s of] dollars of stranded subprime carbon assets, and I’ve spent a lot of time in the investment community analyzing the great global shift, now. And I suggested that it’d be good for Harvard to take a look at the spreadsheet analysis of what was likely to happen. Well, according to three different NGOs in the three years since then, the Harvard endowment has lost roughly 200 million dollars on the carbon assets that were kept. And I don’t mean that in a…well, I don’t mean it in a mean way at all, but I care about this institution a great deal, as Mike [McElroy] said, I was an Overseer, and I love this place so much.

The behavioral scientists talk about the “endowment bias” – no pun intended. They also talk about the “status quo bias” or the “system justification principle” – we have a need to believe that things are basically ok, and if they’re not, it creates anxiety, so we try to push it off. We need to speed up the shift away from dirty, carbon-rich fuels toward a true renewable economy. And I would dearly love, for economic reasons alone, to see Harvard leading the way.”
