View of the River Amstel within the Town toward the Sluse, the Blue Bridge, and the Orphan House of the Poor, taken from the Bridge over the Amstel, Amsterdam.
(Europe, Netherlands, Holland, Nederland, Amsterdam, Amstel River, Blue Bridge, City View, Windmills).
Issued 1794, London by Laurie & Whittle. Engraved by P. van Ryne.
Interesting 18th century engraved prospect view print with original hand color.
Of historical interest for the extensive early American backing paper found on the reverse, clearly affixed long ago, perhaps as early as c. 1806-10 era.
Unlike the vast majority of “vue d’optique’s” produced and sold in Europe int he 18th century, this is one of very few which can reasonably be linked to the United States shortly after it was made, indicating it was either purchased on a trip and brought back or exported for sale here.
Poor condition but still visually appealing. Wide range of condition issues, light surface soiling, short closed edge tears, still entirely worthy of display as it survives.
Sheet measure c. 10 1/4″ H x 15 3/4″ W.
