Chennai is facing a severe water shortage as the southern city becomes the latest in India to be caught up in a nationwide crisis. All four reservoirs serving Chennai had mostly dried up as of June 2019, with storage only about one-hundredth of the levels recorded by the same time the previous year. Authorities say the coastal city’s water woes stem in part from a lack of rain in the 2018 monsoon season. The Indian government has set up a new ministry to tackle the nation’s growing water crisis.
