Humans did not create the ecosystem. We do not understand it. We cannot control it. We must not destroy it. Yet this is what we are doing.
As the world water crisis illustrates, as a species we seem intent upon pursuing projects and behaviors that directly destroy our collective life support systems. This cannot — and will not — persist for long.
To survive we will need to adopt radically new metaphors to guide our behavior and allow us to understand how we can function within the biogeochemical cycling system that has emerged in the fullness of time from Earth’s evolutionary history.
