Can the ‘Great Green Wall’ stop desertification in China?
Published on Jan 30, 2018
Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN China is one of the countries worst affected by desertification. As the Gobi Desert expands further south – engulfing an average of 3,000 square kilometres every year – entire communities are forced to relocate, becoming climate refugees. In a bid to combat this phenomenon, Chinese authorities have been erecting a so-called “Great Green Wall” of vegetation. In some areas, positive results are beginning to show. Why Xi Jinping May Be The World’s Most Powerful Leader
Published on Mar 27, 2018
China’s congress scrapped presidential term limits from the constitution, a move that sets up President Xi Jinping to rule indefinitely and a sign it is returning to a one-man rule system. Government censors on social media have cracked down on criticism of removing term limits, removing political memes and scrubbing mentions of words like “king” or “emperor.” Since 2013 when Xi Jinping came into power, he’s consolidated his power through high-profile anti-corruption drives, a cult of personality and by amassing global influence through trade. He set out an ambitious vision for the way forward at the Communist Party’s 19th Congress last October: for China to become a global superpower.

The US Chamber of Commerce, the nation’s largest business group and customarily a close ally of President Donald Trump’s Republican Party, is launching a campaign on Monday to oppose Trump’s trade tariff policies. With some of America’s tightest trading partners imposing retaliatory measures, Trump’s approach to tariffs has unsettled financial markets and strained relations between the White House and the Chamber.
