Paul Revere house

Paul Revere’s house fronts on North Square which is three blocks from the waterfront at Lewis Wharf, Commercial Wharf and Long Wharf.   On January 4, 2018 Michael Dwyer/Associated Press caught this photo of the high time coming ashore at Long Wharf.

This kind of record high tide is likely to become more frequent in the future according to climate scientists, and this can threaten wharf residents.  See:

Pictures like these of Paul Revere’s house so close to Boston’s wharves should remind us  of the potentially vulnerable locations where Boston will begin to experience the impact of climate change in the coming months and years.  This is one of the topics of the Beacon Hill Seminar (BHS) Spring program, focusing on Boston’s “Climate Vulnerability.”  See:

Pursuing Truth in the Global Economy

Boston National Historical Park – Old Ironsides

Much of Boston’s history is intimately related to its position as a military port since the days of its first settlement through all the wars it has engaged in since.  Its sea-level military installations are all vulnerable to a changing sea-level which has been unleashed as a result of global changes in climate.

As such, this picture provides a link to one of the potentially vulnerable locations where Boston will begin to experience the impact of climate change in the coming months and years.  This is one of the topics of the Beacon Hill Seminar (BHS) Spring program, focusing on Boston’s “Climate Vulnerability.”  See:

The other (more visible – from Route 1A, at least) tank farm in Chelsea

This “tank farm” in Chelsea is well known to anyone who commutes into Boston on Route 1A from the north.   They can see it daily.  It is not very very far from sea level and from the direct presence of the Chelsea river.

What are the plans for its security in the event of hurricane strength storm surges as sea-level continues to rise?

What are the Chelsea defenses against a flood tidal surge from a Category 3 hurricane?

Start teaching yourself about Boston’s climate vulnerability.

Boston-duck-tours.jpg

You can begin by asking yourself: is there going to be information on the famous Boston Duck Tours about Boston’s climate vulnerability?  See for yourself.  To begin, click on the picture below and begin exploring Boston Harbor and surrounding waterways like the Charles River.

Visitors to Boston — and residents of Boston and greater Boston — can learn a great deal on their own about climate vulnerability in Boston simply by taking a ride on the widely popular “Boston Duck Tour” trips in the harbor and in the Charles River.

Teach yourself about sea-level rise and its implications for Boston– some of which the officials may not yet know about — by learning more about climate change vulnerability in Boston from the Beacon Hill Seminar on Boston’s Climate Vulnerability.

Then ask the Boston Duck Tours if they intend to schedule a “Boston climate vulnerability” component as part of the tours that will begin once again on 21 March 2018.
