Noam Chomsky: How the Trump Presidency Is Enriching the Rich

Take your eyes off Trump and you’ll see the most savage fringe of the Republican Party is carefully advancing policies designed to enrich their true constituency.

By Noam Chomsky and David Barsamian | October 3, 2017

David Barsamian: You have spoken about the difference between Trump’s buffoonery, which gets endlessly covered by the media, and the actual policies he is striving to enact, which receive less attention. Do you think he has any coherent economic, political or international policy goals? What has Trump actually managed to accomplish in his first months in office?

Noam Chomsky: There is a diversionary process under way, perhaps just a natural result of the propensities of the figure at center stage and those doing the work behind the curtains.

At one level, Trump’s antics ensure that attention is focused on him, and it makes little difference how. Who even remembers the charge that millions of illegal immigrants voted for Clinton, depriving the pathetic little man of his grand victory? Or the accusation that Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower? The claims themselves don’t really matter. It’s enough that attention is diverted from what is happening in the background. There, out of the spotlight, the most savage fringe of the Republican Party is carefully advancing policies designed to enrich their true constituency: the constituency of private power and wealth, “the masters of mankind,” to borrow Adam Smith’s phrase.

What Exxon Knew

YaleClimateConnections
Published on Dec 8, 2015

Newly released documents show that scientists at Exxon Oil Corporation conducted research on climate change and the greenhouse effect in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their conclusions were in accord with mainstream scientific groups in academia, NASA, NOAA, and the Department of Energy, showing that global warming posed a serious problem, with potential “catastrophic effects.”

BUSTED…Koch Brothers caught funding climate deniers

Kert Davies, Climate Investigations Center joins Thom Hartmann. New documents show that one of America’s top climate change deniers has received over a million dollars from Big Oil and the Koch Brothers. What does that say about how far Big Oil is willing to go to promote lies about climate change and global warming?

Climate Deniers Exposed: Top Scientist Got Funding from ExxonMobil, Koch Brothers, Big Coal

Democracy Now!
Published on Feb 25, 2015

http://democracynow.org – A new investigation exposes how one of the top scientists involved in denying climate change has failed to disclose his extensive funding from the fossil fuel industry. Dr. Wei-Hock Soon of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has downplayed global warming and rejected human activity as its cause, arguing the sun is more responsible than greenhouse gases from pollution. Climate denialists — including Republican Senator James Inhofe, chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee — frequently cite Soon’s work to reject concrete action. But documents obtained by the Climate Investigations Center show Soon received more than $1.2 million from fossil fuel corporations and conservative groups over the last decade and failed to disclose those ties in most of his scientific papers. Funders include ExxonMobil, the American Petroleum Institute, coal utility Southern Company and the Charles G. Koch Foundation. In letters with his funders, Soon referred to his scientific papers or congressional testimony as “deliverables.” We are joined by the Kert Davies, executive director at Climate Investigations Center.

Spy Cables: Greenpeace’s Kumi Naidoo Targeted by Intelligence Agencies as “Security” Threat

Democracy Now!
Published on Feb 25, 2015

http://democracynow.org – Al Jazeera has obtained leaked diplomatic cables showing a number of foreign requests to South African intelligence to spy on activists, NGOs and politicians. One document shows South Korea sought out a “specific security assessment” of Greenpeace International Executive Director Kumi Naidoo in the run-up to a meeting of G20 leaders in Seoul in 2010. The disclosure is among scores contained in leaks to Al Jazeera by a South African intelligence source. From South Africa, we speak with Kumi Naidoo. “We are winning the [climate change] argument, and those trying to hold us back are getting desperate,” Naidoo says.

Africans Rising – For Justice, Peace & Dignity

Wendell Berry | Agriculture for a Small Planet Symposium July 1, 1974

Published on Jul 1, 2014

Today marks the 40th Anniversary of Wendell Berry’s speech about the culture of agriculture that was delivered at the “Agriculture for a Small Planet” Symposium in Spokane, Washington. The first few lines of this speech, written on a yellow legal pad in route to the symposium, inspired his book The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture published in 1977. Berry’s speech was also a catalyst for the launch of the Tilth Movement in the Pacific Northwest. “Your symposium, as well as a lot of other meetings I’ve been to in other parts of the country, proves the literature of a thoughtful and even known constituency for a better kind of agriculture,” wrote Berry in a letter to Gigi Coe and Bob Stilger following the Symposium (July 4, 1974).
