Risen was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. He graduated from Brown University (1977) and received a Master’s degree in Journalism at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism (1978). He is now an investigative reporter for The New York Times, where he has worked since 1998.

In 2007, Risen was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

In 2012, he received the John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award, from the National Press Club.

In 2014, Risen received the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award from Colby College, for demonstrating “courage in his commitment to protect his sources and combat pressures that would undermine his work and that of other journalists.”[26]

At the same time, Colby College also awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree.

In 2014, he received the Stephen Hamblett First Amendment Award, from the New England First Amendment Coalition.

In 2014, he received the Newspaper Guild’s Herbert Block Freedom Award.

In 2015, he received the Ridenhour Courage Prize.

In 2015, he received the Constitutional Champion Award, from The Constitution Project.

In 2015, he received the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award, from The Playboy Foundation.

In 2015, he was inducted into the Medill School of Journalism Hall of Achievement.
