George W. Bush’s Ethics Lawyer: Trump Will Be in Violation of Constitution on Day One

http://democracynow.org – Could Donald Trump be in violation of the Constitution on his first day in office? That’s the conclusion of some leading constitutional law experts. The Constitution prohibits officeholders from accepting “any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.” Law experts say many of Trump’s businesses are already benefiting from his presidency. Kuwait, for example, recently moved its National Celebration Day from the Four Seasons in Georgetown to the Trump International Hotel instead. According to ThinkProgress, Kuwait faced political pressure from the Trump camp to move the location. Other diplomats have reportedly been urged to hold events at Trump’s hotel. Trump and his family also have holdings or projects in Argentina, Brazil, Georgia, India, Ireland, Japan, Philippines and Turkey. In addition, Trump’s businesses owe hundreds of millions of dollars to foreign banks, including Deutsche Bank, UBS and Bank of China. We speak to Richard Painter, professor of corporate law at the University of Minnesota. He was the chief White House ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush from February 2005 to July 2007.

Knowledge Brokerage for Sustainable Development: Innovative Tools for Increasing Research Impact and Evidence-Based Policy Making: André Martinuzzi, Michael Sedlacko

Scientists and policy makers follow different rationalities and sustainable development raises significant challenges for both science and the political system. For science it represents a complex set of interrelated questions, transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries and requiring transdisciplinary approaches and methodologies to provide systemic insights to deal with high levels of complexity. For the political system, sustainable development represents a highly complex set of interrelated policy issues transcending traditional sectoral policy boundaries. Sustainable development therefore presents significant challenges to the political system, with new structures and processes for policy integration, and stakeholder participation with knowledge in high demand. Knowledge brokerage has the potential to help manage these challenges simultaneously in both social systems.

Knowledge Brokerage for Sustainable Development presents a selection of innovative tools to enhance the connectivity of research and policy making on sustainable development issues. It summarizes the experiences of twelve EU funded projects and provides the first systematic analysis of knowledge brokerage experiences for sustainable development. It supports networking among the developers and users of knowledge brokerage systems with the aim of making their experience better known to the different communities involved.

Bill McKibben: Dakota Access Pipeline Resistance Powerful Enough to Overwhelm Fossil Fuel Industry

Democracy Now!

Published on Sep 30, 2016

http://democracynow.org – We speak with 350.org’s Bill McKibben about how the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and members of hundreds of other tribes from across the U.S., Canada and Latin America have resisted construction of the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline, even as police carrying assault rifles responded to them with armored vehicles, tear gas and helicopters. “We cannot pump more oil,” McKibben says. “Frontline communities, and particularly indigenous people, have been in the forefront of this climate fight.” He also discusses Hillary Clinton’s failure to take a stance on the project and how some unions have supported the resistance.
