Current petroleum-intensive agriculture mines and degenerates the soil. To continue to live for much longer the human community must convert to a regenerative agriculture to build soils. Continuing to kill the soil amounts to — as Vandana Shiva has put it — “committing a species-level suicide.” We must learn quickly and urgently how to design and implement regenerative agriculture as part of a strategy of restorative development, based everywhere on enriching topsoil, not continuing its massive destruction with ever more petro-intensive technologies.
