Current petroleum-intensive agriculture mines and degenerates the soil. To continue to live for much longer the human community must convert to a regenerative agriculture to build soils.  Continuing to kill the soil amounts to — as Vandana Shiva has put it — “committing a species-level suicide.”  We must learn quickly and urgently how to design and implement regenerative agriculture as part of a strategy of restorative development, based everywhere on enriching topsoil, not continuing its massive destruction with ever more petro-intensive technologies.

T.C. Weiskel: The Ecological Lessons of the Past: An Anthropology of Environmental Decline

All civilizations depend ultimately on the ecological viability of their agricultural base, as the environmental archaeology of ancient civilisations makes clear. Expansionist Western industrial culture, dependent on resource-depleting petroleum-based agriculture, is only diffeerent in terms of its global scale. If the lessons of the past are not heeded its collapse will also be global.
