Case of Sexually Transmitted Zika Virus Reported in Texas

February 03, 2016 Headlines

Officials in Texas have reported the first case of Zika virus contracted in the United States, saying it was sexually transmitted. If confirmed, it marks only the second known case of Zika transmission through sexual contact. Zika has continued to spread rapidly across Latin America, with Chile reporting its first three cases. The mosquito-borne illness, while generally not life-threatening, has been linked to the birth defect microcephaly, which causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads. The link has raised debates over restrictive abortion laws in countries like Brazil, which has seen nearly 3,700 suspected cases of microcephaly. The World Health Organization’s Anthony Costello announced the latest steps against Zika.

Dr. Anthony Costello: “This morning we’ve now set up a global response unit, which brings together all people across WHO in headquarters in the regions to deal with a formal response, using all the lessons we’ve learned from the Ebola crisis.”

Scientists have linked rising temperatures from global warming to the increased incidence of mosquito-borne infections such as Zika.

How the Koch brothers grew their tentacles

By Heather Smith on 29 Jan 201

How did the Koch brothers — Charles and David Koch, who are, respectively, the sixth and seventh wealthiest people in the world — become the Koch brothers, founders and funders of a vast right-wing message machine? Why aren’t they buying their own islands or hanging out at the Kentucky Derby, instead of pressuring politicians to vote against carbon taxes and spending ever-increasing amounts of money on local and national elections?

Born into another era, or another culture, the Kochs would have been eccentric cranks, operating out at the fringes of political theory. Instead, they’re the leaders of a political machine that has over three times the employees and more funding than the Republican Party. They spent an estimated $122 million in the 2012 election, and $290 million more in 2014; they’ve earmarked $889 million for the upcoming presidential race. How has America come to produce these billionaires, instead of the kind who start by oppressing people but then build a bunch of libraries?

If you want to answer these questions, you won’t find a better starting place than Dark Money, a new history of the Kochs by Jane Mayer, an investigative reporter at the New Yorker. The reviews have understandably focused on the most indelible details Mayer has unearthed from the Koch past — particularly the stern German nanny with a policy of mandatory enemas for those children who didn’t master her toilet-training regimen. (The nanny quit in 1940, when Charles was 5, to return to Europe and help celebrate the Nazi conquest of France.)

They’ve also focused on Mayer’s discovery, after she published an article about the Kochs in the New Yorker, that the Kochs hired a group of “half a dozen or so” investigators to attempt to discredit her and her reporting. “Dirt, dirt, dirt” a source tells her. “If they couldn’t find it, they’d create it.”

World Health Org. Declares Zika an International Public Health Crisis

February 02, 2016

The World Health Organization has declared the Zika virus an international public health emergency. While the virus itself is usually not life-threatening, it appears to be linked to microcephaly, which causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads. Microcephaly also causes a host of other health problems, including seizures, developmental delays, hearing loss and vision problems. The WHO says the Zika virus is “spreading explosively” and that up to 4 million people in the Americas could be infected by the end of this year. World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan spoke out at a news conference in Geneva.

Dr. Margaret Chan: “I am now declaring that the recent cluster of microcephaly and other neurological abnormalities reported in Latin America, following a similar cluster of French Polynesia in 2014, constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.”

Scientists have linked rising temperatures from global warming to the increased incidence of mosquito-borne infections such as Zika.

Oxfam Says Privatization, Tax Havens Drive Global Inequality to Staggering Levels

Published on Jan 21, 2016

http://democracynow.org – A new report from Oxfam on global inequality finds the world’s richest 62 billionaires now own as much wealth as half the world. The wealth of the poorest half—3.6 billion people—has fallen by $1 trillion since 2010. At the same time, the wealth of the world’s richest 62 people has increased by more than half a trillion dollars. Oxfam faults a global financial system that has “supercharged the age-old ability of the rich and powerful to use their position to further concentrate their wealth.” The report singles out deregulation, privatization and offshore tax havens that have let trillions of dollars go untaxed. The Oxfam report is timed to coincide with the meeting of global elites at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. We are joined by Raymond Offenheiser, president of Oxfam America.

The Road to the White House Begins in Iowa, But Is It Already Sold to Wealthy Donors?

Democracy Now!

Published on Feb 2, 2016

http://democracynow.org – Spending by so-called “dark money” groups—political super PACs and other organizations who can hide their funders—is already far ahead of previous election cycles, with estimates it could reach up to half a billion dollars. Outside spending has surged since the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision, which removed limits on campaign spending by ruling that donor money is a form of free speech. We are joined by The Intercept reporter Lee Fang, who’s been following the money trail, from the politicians at the podiums to the money in the shadows.
