House Republicans are planning to scrutinize the recent Paris climate deal and the Obama administration’s pledges to the international community.

Critics of the administration’s handling of the negotiations and climate science doubters are scheduled to testify during a hearing tomorrow, which calls the agreement a “bad deal for America” in its title.

Likely to come up in the House Science, Space and Technology Committee hearing are concerns about the lack of a congressional role in shaping the deal, the “gap” between the Obama administration’s greenhouse gas reduction pledge and estimated emission trends, and the president’s promise to provide financing for developing countries to address climate change.

No administration officials are scheduled to testify.

In Paris last year, nearly 200 nations agreed to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius and to pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5 C. Nations also agreed to periodically review and revise their pledges to reduce heat-trapping carbon emissions.

The deal is unlikely to get a warm reception from committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas), a climate change doubter. He recently said the deal would “increase the control of the federal government over the lives of Americans, all for little environmental benefit.”

Why does it matter?

Antarctica is a climate giant, driving ocean and wind currents worldwide, with enormous potential to raise sea levels.
