Captain arrested for deadly migrant shipwreck

The few survivors of the Mediterranean’s worst-ever migrant boat sinking arrived in Sicily overnight. The boat’s Tunisian captain and one Syrian crew member were taken into custody on suspicion of smuggling, reckless homicide and causing a shipwreck. At least 800, and up to 900, are believed dead, some of whom were allegedly locked below deck. Judy Woodruff reports.

Migrant ship captain accused of multiple homicide over shipwreck

The captain of the migrant ship involved in Sunday’s disaster off Libya has been detained in Sicily, alongside a crew member – both suspected of smuggling migrants to their deaths.

Facing charges of multiple homicide, its claimed Captain Mohammed Ali Malek, 27, steered his severely overloaded boat into a collision with a merchant ship coming to its rescue.

Soldiers brought in to help South African police deal with anti-immigrant attacks
