A PUSH for Harvard University to divest its massive $36bn endowment of interests in 200 fossil fuel companies is building ahead of two days of civil disobedience scheduled for April.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is the latest high profile alumni to sign a letter calling on university administrators to divest ahead of climate change talks in Paris later this year.

Alongside Archbishop Tutu’s signature are those of filmmaker Darren Aronofshy, author Susan Faludi, Robert F Kennedy Jnr, actor Natalie Portman as well as a list of internationally distinguished professors and activists.

Harvard students are planning two days of disobedience on campus during April 12-13 to protest the university’s refusal to divest.

Christie Admin Accused of Forcing Lenient Exxon Settlement for Environmental Damage in New Jersey

democracynow

Published on Mar 5, 2015

A former New Jersey environmental official says the office of Gov. Chris Christie pushed through a favorable settlement that potentially saved the oil giant ExxonMobil billions of dollars. Last week, New Jersey quietly agreed to accept just $250 million from Exxon after initially seeking $8.9 billion for environmental contamination more than a decade ago. The settlement came just two months after the state attorney general’s office made a strong demand for the original $8.9 billion claim, saying in a court brief: “The scope of the environmental damage resulting from the discharges is as obvious as it is staggering and unprecedented in New Jersey.” Writing today in The New York Times, Bradley Campbell, the former commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection, says Governor Christie’s chief counsel, Christopher Porrino, “inserted himself into the case, elbowed aside the attorney general and career employees who had developed and prosecuted the litigation, and cut the deal favorable to Exxon.”

The American empire: denial, delusion & deception

Jerry Kroth

Published on Oct 16, 2012

A recent poll asked Americans if they felt America actually was an empire. Forty percent said “No.” Lawrence Vance alleges the U.S. is the largest empire in the history of the world, dwarfing the British, Ottoman, and Roman empires in size and scope. Prof. Jerry Kroth looks at the delusion and denial rampant within the American population on this issue, examining our 55 military interventions since World War II, our long and close relationship with dictators, juntas, and monarchs in building our empire, our military presence in over 130 countries of the world (70% of the planet) and what life might look like if we actually dismantled it. More at http://collectivepsych.com/Home.html

Duped! Delusion, denial, and the end of the American dream is a penetrating look at contemporary collective delusions slithering across the American landscape. A delusion is a false idea about the world, a kind of intellectual “trance.” When an individual suffers one, the diagnosis of mental illness is not far behind. When a nation labors under them, we have a state of collective mental instability.

This odyssey explores six gargantuan delusions infecting the American psyche: our understanding of our democratic political system, the Iraq war, our perception of ourselves as an empire, issues related to global warming, the musical genre of hip-hop, and our extremely precarious financial condition. In the final chapter, “Slip-slidin to dystopia,” Dr. Kroth reviews the seven major signs of societal collapse. These factors are combined to form “the American Dystopia Index.” When one looks at this metric, the transformation of the American dream to an American nightmare seems all but assured should we not awaken from our myriad trance states in time.

Propaganda and Manipulation: How mass media engineers and distorts our perceptions

Jerry Kroth

Published on Oct 20, 2013

This is a video on the psychology of propaganda. Prof. Kroth reviews five major techniques for how American mass media manipulates and twists the view Americans have of their world. The seriousness of the distortion, and our progressive loss of contact with reality is dramatic. We are increasingly living inside a media-induced trance without knowing it. Children believe Ronald MacDonald is more real than Abraham Lincoln. From Coke to Carl’s Jr., Hip-hop to the Iraq war, the role of subliminal propaganda in our lives is unveiled and exposed. This talk is based on Dr. Kroth’s recent book, Duped! Delusion, Denial, and the end of the American dream (Genotype, 2013). More information at collectivepsych.com
