About | Titoland 2.0

titoland2This is a powerful, new weblog, identifying the struggles of numerous peoples in the Balkans.  In addition to a fractious history of political conflict communities are facing very dangerous flooding and increased vulnerability to a pattern of extreme weather events linked to a changing European climate.

One key question that this will pose for years and decades to come is this:

Will the coming changes in the climate regime exacerbate socio-political divisions or will these changes?   Or, on the hand, could they enable formerly rival groups and interests to recognize the need for solidarity among all human communities for a sustainable, survivable future?

Harvard Humanitarian Initiative

The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) is a university-wide center involving multiple entities within the Harvard community that provide expertise in public health, medicine, social science, management, and other disciplines to promote evidence-based approaches to humanitarian assistance.

The mission of the Initiative is to relieve human suffering in war and disaster by advancing the science and practice of humanitarian response worldwide. HHI fosters interdisciplinary collaboration in order to:

  • Improve the effectiveness of humanitarian strategies for relief, protection and prevention;
  • Instill human rights principles and practices in these strategies;
  • Educate and train the next generation of humanitarian leaders.

Design for urban disaster

What is an urban approach to disaster preparedness and response?

Design-disaster

Urban disasters are on the increase, with rapid urbanization causing more people to live in places vulnerable to hazards such as flood, earthquake and tsunami.

This conference invites humanitarian aid practitioners, those in government and designers from spatial/physical disciplines to explore ways to improve actions before and after disaster.

The conference addresses three key themes:

response – efforts to improve relief and recovery practice;
resilience – building the capacity of a system, community or society potentially exposed to hazards to adapt;
transformation –fundamental change that results in the substantial reduction of a population’s vulnerability.
