Susan Casey-Lefkowitz, National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) joins Thom Hartmann. A new State Department report says that the Keystone XL pipeline would have little impact on global climate change. But can we really trust a report written by contractors affiliated with oil giant TransCanada – the company responsible for the pipeline?
Lynn Stuart Parramore, Alternet, joins Thom. A new grassroots movement is emerging in North Carolina – but national news outlets don’t seem to care. More on that movement and what it says about the so-called “liberal media” in just a moment.
Joining Thom for tonight’s Conversations with Great Minds are Evan Weber – Co-Founder of USClimate Plan – and Angela Anderson – Director of the Climate and Energy Program with the Union of Concerned Scientists. While the East Coast is digging out from the latest massive Winter Storm – the West Coast is dealing with a devastating drought. Chance Williams, Free Press & Todd O’Boyle, Common Cause joins Thom Hartmann. Comcast says its planned $45 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable is going to be great for consumers. But should we celebrate or fear the merger of the two biggest cable companies in the country?
Comcast’s bid to acquire Time Warner Cable, if allowed to occur, would be the 10th largest corporate merger in American history. The company is seeking approval from the FCC and the Department of Justice, who are charged with making sure the giant corporations aren’t breaking any anti-trust laws. But they are already falling into the realm of anti-trust…as in “We the American people DO NOT TRUST this large corporation, whose main goal is to increase its own profit margin, to have our best interests in mind.”
The media is focused on answering the question of what may happen to a user’s service when they should be focused on what will happen to our rights and our democracy. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the government from making any law abridging the freedom of speech or infringing on the freedom of the press. If only our forefathers had included a dictum against market or business endeavors that have the secondary outcome of infringing on these areas. Instead, we are letting the loopholes of the ‘free-market’ decide just how much of our constitutional rights we get to maintain.
