By Antonia Juhasz, oil industry analyst, special to CNN
updated 9:21 AM EST, Fri February 28, 2014

Alicia Cahuilla’s Waorani tribe has lived on the edge of Ecuador’s Yasuni National Park for thousands of years. But they’re worried about new oil exploration in the area.

Yasuni villagers fear for way of life

  • Ecuador’s Yasuni National Park is one of world’s most biologically diverse areas
  • Last year the government cleared the way for oil exploration in the park’s most pristine area
  • Villagers say oil exploration in Yasuni will dramatically affect their way of life
  • Oil firms say they are complying with environmental regulations

Editor’s note: Antonia Juhasz, an oil industry analyst, is author of several books, including “The Bush Agenda” and “The Tyranny of Oil.” Juhasz’s investigation is supported by a grant from the Max and Anna Levinson Foundation, which makes grants to nonprofits committed to “developing a more just, caring, ecological and resilient world.” Her work has also appeared in Rolling Stone, Harper’s Magazine, and The Atlantic’s website. The opinions expressed in this article are solely those of the author.

However, to prevent driving the audience to despair, the presentation also discusses an array of different policy mechanisms that can overcome these pesky barriers.

In the Company of Scholars: Past & Future Movements of Continents Across Earth’s Surface

YaleUniversity

Streamed live on Feb 11, 2014

Geological science gives a unique perspective on humans’ evolving place within the natural world. My research delves into the past motions of continents through billions of years of Earth history. Aside from the academic implications for the inner workings and changing surface environments of our planet, this work also provides a framework for understanding patterns in the distribution of natural resources such as metal ore deposits and fossil fuels. After illustrating the long-term paleogeographic history of our planet, this talk will conclude with speculations on how human society may fare in the not-too-distant future, beyond our current age of unprecedented resource extraction and high standard of living.

thejuicemedia

Published on Feb 27, 2014

RAP NEWS 22 [S02:E02]. Like many others who preceded us, our “civilisation” faces an Energy Crisis of megawattic proportions, which threatens to bring an end to our brief joyride. But our dirty little secret is seldom mentioned in the news, let alone connected to economic instability or to environmental effects on our planet. It falls to Robert Foster to bring this topic back into the fore of our consciousness, where he conducts an incisive analysis of the situation to see what solutions are out there to deal with peak energy. Join your ever-curious anchor as he invites a panoply of guests – the great, the good, the bizarre, and the downright trollsome – along to share their solutions to this crisis. In the end, the shift required might have to be psychological as well as technological. Enjoy the ride, fellow children of the industrial revolution.

The winter ice pack in the Arctic was once dominated by multi-year*, thick ice. Today, very little old ice remains. This animation shows maps of sea ice age from 1987 through the end of October 2013. Age class 1 means “first-year ice,” which is ice that formed in the most recent winter. The oldest ice (9+) is ice that is more than 9 years old. Animation by NOAA climate.gov, based on research data provided by Mark Tschudi, CCAR, University of Colorado. *Revised on 2/21/14. Caption originally said “old.” Revised to “multi-year” to reduce ambiguity.
