Climate Change | Department of Energy

Addressing the effects of climate change is a top priority of the Energy Department. As global temperature rise, wildfires, drought and high electricity demand

put stress on the nation’s energy infrastructure. And severe weather — the leading cause of power outages and fuel supply disruption in the United States — is projected to worsen, with eight of the 10 most destructive hurricanes of all time having happened in the last 10 years.

To fight climate change, the Energy Department supports research and innovation that makes fossil energy technologies cleaner and less harmful to the people and the environment. We’re taking responsible steps to cut carbon pollution, develop domestic renewable energy production and win the global race for clean energy innovation. We’re also working to dramatically increase the efficiency of appliances, homes, businesses and vehicles — all in support of the President’s Climate Action Plan.

MISSION STATEMENT
To protect our planet from famine and disease inflicted by insane scientists, monopolistic corporations, and rogue governments.
All geo-engineering programs must be stopped; not monitored; not limited; not put under UN control; but stopped — now.

What can be done?
Nothing will change until we replace the clueless and spineless
politicians who have ignored or supported geo-engineering. So..

Run for office or support a candidate who stands against geo-engineering; write letters to editors, send e-mails, call radio shows, distribute DVDs, organize film showings, place What in the World Are They Spraying on Public Access, become a news scout for stories and events relating to geo-engineering

Organize a Public Screening:

This documentary has taken off like a rocket! and many people have asked if they could organize a public screening in their local town. The answer, of course, is YES, YES.

That made us realize that this is a great way to introduce geo-engineering, not just to neighbors and friends, but to the whole town, so we are passing the idea to you. If you want to do something really different and reach a large number of people, this is for you. Our only caveat is that you should not try this alone. We suggest you bring together at least three others (the more the better) who will help with promotion and staffing the event. It also is recommended that sponsors be obtained beforehand who will cover the expenses in the unlikely but possible event that ticket sales and DVD sales fall short of out-of-pocket costs. Sometimes the best choice is to rent a small movie theater within a large movie complex because it already has ticket takers and ushers and probably won’t require that you obtain liability insurance. All you need to add is a PA system (unless they have one) and arrange a place for your display tables and reception. We can help by providing art work for movie posters and flyers, and we will publish the details of your screening in the Unfiltered News Events Calendar. If you you would like more information, contact Michael Murphy, President of the Coalition Against Geo-Engineering.

Japan Pursues a Nuclear Future Despite a Devastating Past

Published on Jan 15, 2014

Japan is getting ready to mark the third anniversary of one of the world’s worst atomic disasters. It was March 11, 2011, when a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami that struck Japan’s northeast coast. The twin disasters triggered a meltdown at the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station. The radiation that spewed from the plant stranded more than 315,000 evacuees. In the years following the Fukushima disaster, tens of thousands of Japanese have taken to the streets to march in opposition to nuclear power. In the nearly three years since the disaster, the Fukushima cleanup and decommissioning efforts have been complicated by leaks of highly radioactive water. The effort has also suffered from a lack of oversight and a shortage of workers, which Reuters reports has led to Japan’s homeless population being easy prey for recruiters. Following the disaster, Japan halted nearly all nuclear-related projects. However, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party reversed its campaign pledge to move Japan away from nuclear power just one week after coming into power in December 2012. Today, Japan’s trade ministry said it would approve a revival plan for the utility responsible for the Fukushima nuclear disaster: Tokyo Electric Power Company. This will be the second attempt to restore the utilities’ depleted finances.

PASA

In existence since 1992, the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) continues working to bring farmers together to learn from each other, and to build relationships between those farmers and consumers looking for fresh, wholesome, locally and sustainably produced food.

As the largest statewide, member-based sustainable farming organization in the United States, we seek to improve the economic viability, environmental soundness and social responsibility of food and farming systems in Pennsylvania and across the country. We place great value on efforts to build bridges between broadly diverse participants in the agricultural industry, from “farm to fork.”

PASA grew out of the need for an educational and support system for farmers – both experienced and beginning – interested in non-traditional agricultural practices, such as organic, biodynamic and grass-based farming, as well as the desire to create local markets for sustainably produced food.

PASA’s mission is the underlying theme of all of our programs – promoting profitable farms that produce healthy food for all people while respecting the natural environment – as our work is rooted in education and support for farmers, and outreach to the general public:

Just some of the programs & services we offer:

A comprehensive Farm-Based Education program, including an annual Farming for the Future Conference and a full season of Field Days and Master Classes on sustainable farming methods;

Our Farm Lease Connection service, designed to build successful farm enterprises between farmers and landowners of all kinds;

The Good Food Neighborhood®community outreach program, established to serve both farmers and consumers by enhancing communication and strengthening businesses and organizations participating in local food systems.

Coordination of Buy Fresh Buy Local® chapters in Pennsylvania, and nationally through our FoodRoutes Network, LLC subsidiary, promoting businesses and farms, and connecting consumers to their local food sources; and

A trusted, third-party certification program for our region’s food producers through a partnership with Food Alliance.

PASA considers it both a privilege and responsibility to be at the forefront of the sustainable food movement, as we focus on market access, sustainability standards and public engagement.

MSc in Climate Change and Policy

Climate change and sustainable energy are perhaps the most important issues of our time. The challenge is to make a worldwide transition to a low-carbon economy, while at the same time providing modern energy services to a growing population and adapting to the increasingly substantial, but often uncertain, impacts of a changing climate. To meet these challenges, society needs professionals and policy-makers who understand the complex, multidimensional scientific, socioeconomic, technological and institutional challenges associated with sustainable energy, climate change mitigation and climate adaptation.

Our climate change and energy policy degrees are designed to provide state-of-the-art training for this expanding professional market.

Sussex is renowned for its agenda-setting, interdisciplinary teaching and research in science, development, and policy studies. You will be taught by leading researchers who have played key roles advising governmental/intergovernmental bodies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on climate change mitigation and adaptation and/or energy policy.

For the MSc in Climate Change and Development and the MSc Climate Change and Policy, you will be taught by faculty from the Department of Geography, SPRU – Science and Technology Policy Research, and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS):

  • the Department of Geography is a leading centre of geographical scholarship in the UK, with particular strengths in climate science, impacts and adaptation
  • SPRU – Science and Technology Policy Research was ranked 2nd science and policy think tank in the UK and 11th in the world (University of Pennsylvania: Global Go-To Think-Tanks Report 2012). The Sussex Energy Group is one of the largest independent social science energy policy research groups in the world
  • IDS is ranked 1st university-affiliated think tank in the UK and 3rd in the world (University of Pennsylvania: Global Go To Think Tanks Report 2012)
  • the Climate Change research team at IDS promotes collaborative research and policy analysis, delivery of high-quality research degrees, knowledge services, teaching and training. The team works closely with the University of Sussex and a strong network of partners in developing countries.

The MSc in Energy Policy for Sustainability is taught by faculty in SPRU – Science and Technology Policy Research who are part of the Sussex Energy Group. The group undertakes academically rigorous, interdisciplinary research engaging with policy-makers and practitioners. The aim of our research is to identify ways of achieving the transition to sustainable, low-carbon energy systems.
