Rachel Smolker: Laugh or Cry? Obama’s New Commitment on Climate Change

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rachel-smolker/laugh-or-cry-obama_b_2550507.html

Rachel Smolker Co-director, Biofuelwatch Posted: 01/28/2013 3:54 pm

In his inaugural address, President Obama spoke eloquently about his intent to address climate change, saying: “We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations.” Following on, the right-wing deniers predictably flew into a frenzy of obnoxious blather, largely serving to clog up the media. Meanwhile the liberals, progressives and enviros cheered with glee, as if the mere mention of the word “climate” were a big happy victory, a frankly pathetic display that I can only imagine the right-wing deniers found amusing. The spectrum of responses is a clear reflection of the extreme dysfunction of, most especially, Washington D.C. Even as Sandy smashed NYC to smithereens and prolonged drought decimated crops across the Midwest, the leader of the country most responsible for this frightening mess is so cowed by his detractors as to feel it necessary to wait until after his reelection to even mention that seven-letter word? Oh yay.

For climate justice activists, the question is: Should we laugh or should we cry? It has certainly been disturbing to watch Obama, facing the greatest threat to life on Earth ever (yes, far greater even than the economic crisis) fail to even utter that word. But, we are also aware that when he has in fact stepped up to the plate on climate, it has not usually been pretty. For example, in 2009, when, at the eleventh hour he flew to the UN climate negotiations in Copenhagen to push through, via the back rooms, a “made in the U.S.” deal that removed any teeth from the negotiated agreement that had been painstakingly hammered out in accordance with participatory UN protocols. That showing in the international climate debate followed on the heels of years of U.S. interference and obstructionism, remarkable given that the we are not even a signatory to the Kyoto protocol. Going back even further into history prior to Copenhagen, there was the U.S. role in demanding (against the will of many other countries at the time) that the main approach to reducing greenhouse gases be a market-based approach: carbon trade, which has subsequently and predictably, entirely failed. A headline of the Financial Times reads:”EU Carbon Prices Crash to Record Low.” ….(more).

Hartford, Conn.—Prospective investors in the Canadian tar sands were met by demonstrators yesterday at a meeting hosted by the US Commercial Service and the Canadian Consulate General.

Throughout the morning, climate justice organizers with Green Mountain Earth First!, Rising Tide Vermont, and Capitalism vs. the Climate attempted to enter the highly guarded meeting, although no demonstrators were able to pass through security check points.

The meeting, described on the Export.gov website as, “…an opportunity for Connecticut businesses in the areas of Oil and Natural Resource Service sector to explore concrete opportunities for export in support of the ongoing development in the Alberta Oil Sands region,” involved billions of dollars of investment opportunities. Sponsors included Exxon-Mobil subsidiary Imperial Oil, Suncor Energy, Canadian Natural Resources Limited and Cenovus. ….(more).

Asteroid Will Fly Within 18,000 Miles Of Earth

On February 15, 2012, asteroid DA14’s nearest approach will be 17,200 miles. It is about half the size of a football field and similar in size to the asteroid that leveled 100 square miles of forest in Siberia in 1908 (Tungunska Event).

OneWorld Anniversary Birthday Party – celebrating 18 adventurous years

OneWorldTV

24th January 2013 was OneWorld’s 18th birthday. The celebration, attended by OneWorlders including many from way back, also marked the decision of the two founders of OneWorld, Anuradha Vittachi and Peter Armstrong, to be stepping down from their executive roles.

The party coverage starts with a video retrospective reflecting eighteen adventurous years of riding the wave of digital innovation, from the very beginning of the web. Then with tributes to OneWorld from around the globe, Anuradha Vittachi and Peter Armstrong handed over to the next generation of OneWorlders.

BBC News – Drill reaches Antarctica’s under-ice Lake Whillans

An American attempt to bore down into Lake Whillans, a body of water buried almost 1km under the Antarctic ice, has achieved its aim.

Scientists reported on Sunday that sensors on their drill system had noted a change in pressure, indicating contact had been made with the lake.

A camera was then sent down to verify the breakthrough.

The Whillans project is one of a number of such ventures trying to investigate Antarctica’s buried lakes.

In December, a British team abandoned its efforts to get into Lake Ellsworth after encountering technical difficulties.

The Russians have taken water samples from Lake Vostok, although they have yet to report any big discoveries.

Lake Whillans is sited in the west of Antarctica, on the southeastern edge of the Ross Sea.

It is less of a lake and more of a dense system of streams, almost like a delta, that covers some 60 square km. The liquid body is quite shallow – just a few metres in depth.

The Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling (Wissard) team has been using a hot-water drill to melt a 30cm-diameter hole through the overlying ice. ….(more).
