Climate: Yale’s Speth calls for shift from U.S. consumer capitalism to solve environmental woes — 04/22/2008 — www.eenews.net — video guide

EETV-Interview

22 April 2008

Yale’s Speth calls for shift from U.S. consumer capitalism to solve environmental woes

Will shifting from a GDP-driven society help solve the United States’ environmental problems? In his new book, “The Bridge at the Edge of the World: Capitalism, the Environment, and Crossing from Crisis to Sustainability,” James Gustave Speth, dean of the Yale School on environment and forestry, argues that U.S.-style consumer capitalism needs to change in order for any progress on the environment to occur. During today’s OnPoint, Speth, a former chair of the Council on Environmental Quality and founder of both the Natural Resources Defense Council and the World Resources Institute, explains why he is unhappy with the current state of environmentalism. He also gauges the changing level of interest in environmental issues on college campuses throughout the country.

Yoko Ono And Sean Lennon Post New York Times Ad: ‘Imagine There’s No Fracking’ | ThinkProgress

http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2012/12/16/1308281/yoko-ono-and-sean-lennon-post-new-york-times-ad-imagine-theres-no-fracking/

By Joe Romm on Dec 16, 2012 at 10:08 am

Last week, Sean Lennon and his mother Yoko Ono posted this ad in the New York Times:

The son and wife of the late John Lennon posted this message as part of Artists Against Fracking. The ad explains:

No amount of regulation can ever make fracking safe. No one can be sent thousands of feet under the earth to make repairs once the cement fails – and it will. The enormous pressure and temperature changes at those depths guarantee it…

Fracked gas is not climate friendly. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that leaks from the failed wells, fractured rock and pipelines….

New York can become the Clean Energy Empire State. With an economy bolstered by insulating all buildings. This way we could save far more energy and create FAR more jobs than fracking, plus save consumers money forever. And let’s scale up solar and wind power with a smart grid for truly clean, economical energy.

350 Movement Against the Fossil Fuel Industry. “Do The Math” on Climate Science!

AlienScientist

Published on Nov 16, 2012

Some footage from “Do The Math” speaking tour in Boston, MA 11/15/2012 at the Orphevum Theater. They are building a global movement to solve the climate crisis.

Please check out 350.org and do the math:

I had a friend invite me to go to this last minute. I had never heard of it before. I almost expected it would be a 2 hour presentation on climate change math and calculations (which I wouldn’t have minded either) but I was amazed that there was this growing global movement lashing back against the Fossil Fuel Industry, that I had no idea about! I thought this was amazing and that I had to share with my audience.

So hear it is, would love to hear your thoughts, and I hope some of you join up with this movement and contribute your unique ideas for REAL SOLUTION to this epic planetary crisis we are in
