Blood and Oil – A Declaration of Dependence

“Of course it’s about oil, we can’t really deny that.”
Fmr. CENTCOM Commander General John Abizaid
Synopsis:
The notion that oil motivates America’s military engagements in the Middle East is often disregarded as nonsense or mere conspiracy theory. Blood and Oil, a new documentary based on the critically-acclaimed work of Nation magazine defense correspondent Michael T. Klare, challenges this conventional wisdom to correct the historical record. The film unearths declassified documents and highlights forgotten passages in prominent presidential doctrines to show how concerns about oil have been at the core of American foreign policy for more than 60 years — rendering our contemporary energy and military policies virtually indistinguishable. In the end, Blood and Oil calls for a radical re-thinking of US energy policy, warning that unless we change direction, we stand to be drawn into one oil war after another as the global hunt for diminishing world petroleum supplies accelerates.

How Obama, Romney Differ On FEMA
Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney spent Tuesday dodging reporters’ questions on whether he would eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and send the money back to the states to manage disaster response.
In a June 2011 Republican primary debate (see transcript below), Romney suggested that disaster relief would be better handled by the states, or even the private sector…..(more).

Climate Change, Hurricanes and the Fate of America’s Coastal Cities

http://www.democracynow.org/2012/10/30/climate_change_hurricanes_and_the_fate
Climate author and activists Mike Tidwell argues “we are all New Orleanians up and down the East Coast,” as he relates the devastation wrought by Superstorm Sandy to the experience of those in the past of similar storms that hit the Gulf Coast. “The fingerprints of climate change are all over this storm” and others, says Tidwell as he joins us from Takoma, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C., where the federal government has shut down and life has come to a complete stop as the nation’s capital faces power outages and flooding related to Superstorm Sandy. Tidwell is director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network and author of “The Ravaging Tide: Strange Weather, Future Katrinas, and the Coming Death of America’s Coastal Cities.” [includes rush transcript]…..(more).
