Prairie Fire – Revolutionize the Food System

Published on Sep 9, 2012 by peakmoment

Peak Moment 219: Novelist Dan Armstrong’s “Prairie Fire” is a fast-paced thriller whose characters forge unlikely alliances to revolutionize the American food system. It’s spearheaded by farmers squeezed by skyrocketing oil prices while marketeers get whopping price gains. This revolution is unlikely to succeed, yet… well, we won’t spoil it! In Dan’s “Taming the Dragon”, climate change causes Chinese grain production to plummet, bringing the world to the brink. Dan illuminates the real-world backdrop behind both novels. His solution? Localize food production. Meet farmer Harry MacCormack with exciting results in central Oregon. [www.mudcitypress.com, sunbowfarm.org]

Controversial Pro-Israel Ads Go Up in Washington Subway

Published on Oct 12, 2012 by VOAvideo

U.S. District Court judge in Washington DC has ruled that the city’s subway system must allow a pro-Israel ad that equates Muslim radicals with savages to be displayed in Metro stations. Legal experts say there is no way around the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which protects freedom of speech, even when some people consider that speech offensive. VOA’s Jeff Swicord reports.

[ The ad draws upon a long tradition of the racist worldview in America, originating in the subjugation of indigenous populations who were represented as “savages.”  Israel, in its pattern of favorable policies towards settler communities expanding in the occupied territories of Palestine, is understood by many to represent the same kind of white-settler mentality characteristic of early American history and apartheid South Africa.  Ads like this one and similar ones in New York city appeared in subways during a period corresponding to  America’s annual celebration of Columbus Day. ]

Scientists say billions required to meet conservation targets
By Matt McGrath Science reporter, BBC World Service
Reducing the risk of extinction for threatened species and establishing protected areas for nature will cost the world over $76bn dollars annually.

The scientists say the daunting number is just a fifth of what the world spends on soft drinks annually.
And it amounts to just 1% of the value of ecosystems being lost every year, they report in the journal Science….(more)
